Purpose:
The Professional Critical Care Ground (CCG) Nurse will work as part of the critical care ground team. The Professional CCG Nurse will follow PA DOH BLS, ALS and CCG guidelines; and is responsible for the care of critically ill and injured patients. Responsibilities include patient care incorporating assessment, stabilization and intervention techniques consistent with standards and protocols approved by the Medical Director. The Professional CCG Nurse is expected to execute independent judgment, to deliver appropriate care that is consistent with the clinical protocols, when contact with a medical command physician is not possible. The Professional CCG Nurse fulfills education and experiential requirements as established by the Medical Director, and performs other duties as assigned. Supports and upholds the mission, goals, and objectives, of the UPMC system at all times.
Responsibilities:
- Adheres to the current uniform policy.
- Maintains fitness for duty (if qualified as a flight crew member) by adhering to all employee health requirements, including maximum weight, hearing conservation program, and required medical screenings. Reports injuries and completes the appropriate documentation, no matter how minor, to a supervisor in a timely manner.
- Documents appropriate assessment, interventions, and other pertinent patient information in a timely manner.
- Collects and promptly processes demographic, medical necessity, and other necessary billing information.
- Selects and uses personal protective equipment appropriate to the level of the anticipated hazard.
- Demonstrates the ability to establish a rapport with customers; including the ability to create and sustain a positive relationship; regardless of circumstances, environment, or patient presentation.
- Demonstrates competency related to pharmacological interventions.
- Completes all official documentation in a timely manner such as payroll, expense reports, orientation forms, etc. Adheres to rules for scheduling, including schedule requests, minimum time, and availability.
- Reflects a positive attitude to the customer in a high stress environment at all times, with a clear understanding of who the customer is.
- Provide advanced life support to critically ill or injured patients in adherence with established protocols and standards of care; assessing online medical command or other resources when appropriate. Participates in developing and completing research projects.
- Ensures the safety of patients and all others. Utilizes appropriate safety channels to report safety concerns, and uses tools available to enhance a safe work environment.
- Reports for work well rested, and fit for duty. Adhering to the drug and alcohol policy at all times. including prescription and/or over the counter medicine use.
- Performs all assigned duties, including daily, weekly, monthly, or other duties assigned by the base site manager, including (but not limited to): Performs daily equipment check (vehicle, medications) Ensures crew is logged onto computer duty roster Participates in shift report from off going crew Equipment checks Transport log Medication log
- Ensures safe operation of patient laden stretcher employing appropriate stretcher discipline at all times. Maintains safe loading, unloading, adjustment of head of stretcher, and stretcher movement.
- Demonstrates skills, competencies, and judgment necessary to provide patient care in any environment; using educational resources that are required or made available.
- Actively participates in the development and training of new staff.
- Maintains clean patient environment as well as crew quarters
- Ensures patient and family confidentiality and dignity at all times.
- Participates constructively in the peer-review driven quality improvement program.
- Responds promptly and efficiently to all requests for service.
- Participates in scheduled and unscheduled outreach activities, representing the UPMC system.
Community LifeTeam, is a Mobile Integrated Health Service that employs more than 200 highly trained, certified Emergency Medical Technicians, Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics that are ready to respond to any medical emergency, day or night. Community LifeTeam responds to over 50,000 requests for service each year. We provide both basic and advanced life support to 81 municipalities in Dauphin, York, Cumberland, Schuylkill and Northumberland Counties. Our Coverage areas in Urban, Suburban and Rural communities. In addition to emergency responses, Community LifeTeam provides non-emergency interfacility transportation. In addition to normal operations, our Special Operations Division members support multiple calls for specialty response to Technical Rescues, Federal/State Disaster Response for Urban Search/Rescue and provide Tactical EMS Support to various Law Enforcement Agencies throughout the eastern part of Pennsylvania.
Qualifications
- Three years clinical experience with a busy advanced life support or critical care ambulance service or critical care experience in a hospital setting.
- RN applicants who have two years of experience and functioned previously as a Flight/Critical Care Transport Paramedic may be considered based on assessment of his/her role as a paramedic, years in the role and approval of a transition plan by the Medical Director (in accordance to CAMTS requirements).
- Must be eligible to receive medical command authorization by the Medical Director, have reliable transportation, and be willing to travel to any base site as assigned.
- Must be able to successfully complete the prescribed orientation program, including classroom, clinical rotations, educational competencies, and on the job training.
- Must work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities, and specialized equipment.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

RN applicants who have two years of experience and functioned previously as a Flight/Critical Care Transport Paramedic may be considered based on assessment of his/her role as a paramedic, years in the role and approval of a transition plan by the Medical Director (in accordance to CAMTS requirements).Must obtain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on a Professional Staff Nurse Performance Evaluation to be promoted to this level. Must maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on annual performance evaluation to maintain status. Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families. Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment. Exemplary clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care. Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process. Mobility and visual manual dexterity.
