Research Assistant Basic Science

Description

Magee-Womens Research is looking to hire a Full-time Research Assistant Basic Science.

Infertility affects about 10-15% of the reproductive population in the United States, with many of these case being classified as idiopathic. In human, errors during meiotic prophase I can lead to infertility, miscarriages, birth defects and some cases premature ovarian failure.  At the Brieño-Enríquez lab we are interested in the  mechanisms that  regulate the ovary development from early stages of development to adulthood.  Using different models such as mouse, naked mole rat and human, we  study how the chromosomes maintain their cohesion and segregates during meiosis, but  also how age and environmental factors  modify the fertility and the egg quality.

This position will be responsible for performing experiments as outlined in the protocol including solution and sample preparation, conducting experiment, operating analytical instrument, record keeping, data analysis and report generation. They will also be responsible for the orders, keeping protocols up to date, and all of the typical tasks of a lab tech. This position will include handling mice, genotyping, PCRs, cell cultures, and western-blotting.
 
This position is grant funded. 


Under supervision of Faculty or Research Associate, accurately completes research projects according to established study design and procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, label, store and dispose of reagents, and calibrates equipment for research projects.
  • Assist in obtaining educational resources necessary to perform and interpret research and to remain abreast in research area of function.
  • Maintain laboratory inventory, including timely ordering and receipt of required supplies and their proper storage.
  • Follow the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
  • Perform approved research projects according to defined protocols and procedures including appropriate collection, recording, storage, and analysis of data, and reporting of results.
  • Maintain a safe clean laboratory-working environment including appropriate equipment maintenance and usage, by conforming to laboratory and hospital policies and standards.
  • Responsible for following the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
  • Follow appropriate research policies and procedures including all applicable laws and regulations and maintains scientific integrity including accurate data storage.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, biology or other basic science.
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity necessary for handling and processing specimens for testing, including preparation of specimens, operation of laboratory equipment, microscopic examination, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately collect, store and interpret research data.
