Research Specialist



Dr. César Escobar-Viera, PhD, MD, from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking an Administrative and Media Coordinator to start a team that will promote, support, and conduct mental health services research at the intersections of social media, applied technology, and behavioral health. The incumbent will be joining a new research initiative in the department of psychiatry that focuses on leveraging digital technology to improve the mental health of sexual and gender minority populations (i.e., LGBTQ+, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, otherwise known as queer). The incumbent is responsible for assisting in the creation of educational content (e.g., animated videos using online platforms, infographics, etc.) targeted to LGBTQ+ audiences, maintaining initiative’s communications, including targeted outreach via e-mails, social media ads for study recruitment, as well as maintenance of study social media accounts and website. In addition, the person is responsible for assisting with preparing, writing, editing, and submitting manuscripts, grant, and IRB applications. Finally, the incumbent will support the Initiative’s Director with related administrative tasks as needed. 

This position is grant funded. 

  • Assisting in educational content creation targeted to LGBTQ+ audiences by utilizing existing online platforms (e.g., Animaker, Vyond) to create animated videos for dissemination of educational and research content related to digital technology use and mental well-being. 
  • Create infographics and other visually appealing dissemination materials with specific LGBTQ+ audiences in mind (e.g., rural, transgender, youth, bisexual, Black, Latino, etc.).
  • Maintaining initiative’s communications including electronic communications, including targeted and social media sources such as web content, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms as they become available. 

  • Maintenance of the Initiative’s social media presence and developing visually appealing reports and images. 

  • Maintenance of external communications including developing and distributing social media ads for study participant recruitment, and e-mails for maintaining participant engagement, reach out to entities, research groups, and advocacy organizations.

  • Assisting with preparing, writing, editing, and submitting manuscripts, grant, and IRB applications including preparing literature reviews, tables, and figures for publications. 

  • Working directly with the Initiative’s Director along with other members with writing, reviewing, and editing various materials for grant, presentation, manuscript preparation, and IRB for submission, as well as keeping records of publications and presentations.

  • Assisting with office work as needed to support the Initiative’s Director. 

  • Responsible for attending meetings and completing any follow up duties after the meeting.

  • Be an active and participating member at all team and individual meetings, either online or in-person.


  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in psychology, neuroscience, sociology or related research field.
  • Minimum of one year of work experience in a research project and/or related clinical setting is required.
  • Familiarity with computers and common software packages required.
  • Working knowledge of research methodology strongly preferred.
