What is the Graduate Nurse Rotational Program (GNRP)? 

UPMC Magee Womens Hospital is pleased to announce we are NOW HIRING Graduate Nurses as full-time Staff Nurses to support various hospital units as part of a special Rotational Program. Within the obstetrics (OB) units and the neonatal units (NICU) at UPMC Magee Women’s Hospital, nurses help bring almost 10,000 new lives into the world every year. As an OB/NICU nurse you are present for the most important moment in a family’s life. You provide care not only to the mother and infant, but for the entire family. The OB/NICU GNRP will begin in August 2021. Previous participants have had the opportunity to rotate through various OB/NICU units, including Labor and Deliver, Mother Baby Postpartum, High Risk Obstetrics, and the NICU for 4-6 weeks each.  The length of the program will be 6 months.

The Staff Nurse provides highly competent patient care and treatment while demonstrating empathy and a passion for learning. What Does Placement Look Like Post-GNRP?  

Upon completion of the Graduate Nurse Rotational Program, placements are determined by participant preference, Hiring Manager preference, and business need through a collaborative matching process at UPMC Mercy.


Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary from the My Nursing Career Ladder based on their individual experience and education.

 

Shift/Hours: Our RNs work a rotating 12 hour shifts to ensure 24/7 coverage on the floor. 

 

Graduate Nurses are encouraged to apply. GNs must be eligible for State Board Licensure and successfully pass the examination before beginning this role.  


Responsibilities


Under the direction of the RN preceptor demonstrates the ability to: 

  • Respond directly to patient requests and appropriately communicate patient needs or changes in condition. 
  • Complete initial admission assessments, daily assessments, and discharge plans. 
  • Implement safety principles when caring for mothers and newborns. 
  • Identify patient and family needs for education and provide basic education to support the plan of care. 
  • Complete documentation requirements according to guidelines. 
  • Maintain strict observance of Standard Precautions practices. 
  • Transport, transfer, and position patients safely. 
  • Organize and pace the delivery of care according to the needs of the patient and the unit. 
  • Utilize the chain-of-command when confronted with patient and/or unit problems. 
  • Seeks, accepts, and utilizes performance feedback from peers, preceptors, and unit leaders as a learning opportunity and to improve practice. 
  • Communicates effectively, both verbally and in documentation. 
  • Collaborates effectively with all members of the healthcare team to provide optimal, safe patient care. 
  • Performs in accordance with unit / department guidelines / policy and System-wide competencies/behaviors. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • BSN preferred
  • Completion of UPMC student nurse internship or student clinical transitions course at UPMC preferred
  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
  • Critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.
  • Good clinical judgment.
  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.
  • This program is for GNs/RNs with no previous experience practicing as an RN

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

  • Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse required prior to program start date.
  • Basic Life Support/CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire 
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
  • Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance 
  • Act 73 Federal Criminal Clearance
