Description

Purpose:
UPMC Community Medicine is currently hiring a regular, full-time Diagnostic Technologist to support the Tri Rivers Musculoskeletal office located in McCandless. This position will work four 10 hour shifts ranging from 7:00am - 5:00pm. Occasional travel to the satellite offices will be required.

Performs imaging procedures at a technical level not requiring constant supervision. Competently performs a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative to apply prescribed ionizing radiation for diagnostic purposes.

Responsibilities:
  • Reviews patient history and accesses orders applying specific office protocol for optimal results. Documents patient electronic health record as required. 
  • Instruct and explain procedures to patients to solicit their cooperation. Position patients to obtain quality images specific for diagnosis. General knowledge of digital x-ray and/or fluoroscopy equipment
  • Set, adjust, manipulate and control a variety of complex electronic equipment to apply ionizing radiation for radiographic and/or fluoroscopic examinations 
  • Practice radiation protection in accordance with established regulatory agency requirements. Follows ALARA principals.
  • Performs basic equipment troubleshooting skills and reports all equipment malfunctions 
  • Performs a variety of orthopedic related activities including applying and removing dressings, casts and splints and removing sutures and staples. Knowledge of specialized casting and bracing. Distributes durable medical equipment when necessary.
  • Assists with answering phone messages. Provides complete and accurate information to assist provider in answering patient messages. Clear and concise documentation is used and all messages are resolved in a timely manner. 
  • Assists with improving office flow by supporting other teams or departments as needed. Proactively adjusts processes to facilitate office flow and maintain office hours
  • Maintains exam rooms and clinical work area. Keep the areas neat, clean and stocked with necessary supplies. Performs end of day room cleaning and processes and documents properly
  • Observes HIPPA privacy practices. Maintains confidentiality of sensitive patient information at all times
  • Identifies all patients properly by using two patient identifiers and utilizes universal protocol when performing procedures. Reviews patient history and assesses physician orders, applying specific departmental protocols for optimal results in the acquisition of data. Documents patient history in electronic record as required.
  • Administers PO and rectal contrast per physician orders/department policy
  • Ensures all exams within his/her area of responsibility are properly coded and tracked through RIS system, all exams are properly networked to ISITE for archiving and interpretation, and all charges are adequately entered for the exams performed.
  • Performs diagnostic radiography procedures utilizing established protocols/procedures without requiring constant supervision.
  • Utilizes complex imaging equipment for the acquisition, analysis, manipulation and documentation of image data and completes procedures according to protocol.
  • Demonstrates a strong ability to interact with both patients and co-workers, while displaying a high level of caring, listening, dignity and respect. Able to work as team member within the department and all other departments to expedite patient care efficiently.
  • Performs a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgement to adjust protocols and shows initiative to apply prescribed ionizing radiation appropriately for diagnostic radiography purposes.
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate instructions to patients in a clear and concise manner and explain procedures to help allay the patients fears and solicit their cooperation.
  • Responsible for preparing and distributing images for operating room procedures
  • Assists provider in back office clinical duties including rooming patients, taking vital signs and complete patient history, performs basic triage and assists with minor in office procedures to include applying and removing dressings. Instruct patients
  • Assist with ultrasound image exporting and archiving of patient records
  • Place orders appropriately per provider protocol
  • Assists team in answering phone messages with clear and concise information, obtain authorizations and schedule testing as needed.
  • Ability to navigate, import and export to and from PACS

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an ARRT approved school of Radiologic Technology or verification from ARRT approved school of completion of program and scheduled graduation date. 
  • Technologists hired before graduation will have indirect supervision by an ARRT certified diagnostic technologist until the degree is verified.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
ARRT Registry eligible as a Radiologic Technologist. Must obtain radiography registry within 12 months of hire date. CPR or BLS Required CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
