We are hiring a SWAT - OR Registered Nurse to travel throughout Allegheny County and to outlying PA hospital locations (UPMC Altoona, Bedford Memorial, Hamot, Horizon, Jameson and Northwest).

In this role, you will be scheduled on a six week assignment and will work either three consecutive 12 hour days, four consecutive 10 hour days, or five eight hour days depending on hospital assignment.
They will be utilized to fill shifts in all OR areas of high need. SWAT OR nurses must be willing to work at all UPMC facilities and accept regular rotational assignments as determined by a SWAT team supervisor. The SWAT OR nurse will NOT be required to be on call, otherwise chosen by the participant and approved by the Unit Director and SWAT team supervisor. Off shift coverage may be required in facilities that have extended need for shift coverage. Weekend shifts not required.
System Nursing Resources (SNR) SWAT team positions receive full-time benefits as well as increased compensation at $40.00/hr (with an additional $1-3 an hour in shift differential) to reward their flexibility. - Function independently with one day orientation, unless otherwise specified. Maintain critical thinking skills, analytical and problem solving abilities as related to various aspects of patient care. Cultivate professional relationships and communication in the clinical environment.
- Strictly adhere to all policies and practices relative to patient care and hospital related information.
- Seek out appropriate nursing, physician or other health care team intervention.
- Take action to improve knowledge, skills and performance based on feedback or on self-identified developmental needs.
- Ensure clean, safe environment through continued alertness to safety and explosive hazards and aseptic technique.
- Utilize nursing process in managing the care of patients including assessment, interdisciplinary planning, implementation, evaluation of patient care, teaching and discharge planning.
- Communicate patient's condition to physician and other key members of the health care team.
- Preparation of operating room prior to operational services by preparing the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions. Assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment. Adjust and check equipment to ensure functionality.
- Collaborate with physician and care team to ensure quality patient care.
- Maintain critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of nursing.
- Count sponges, needles, supplies and instruments according to policy
- Assist the surgical team with putting on sterile gowns and gloves.
- Must be able to function in two specialty areas of OR nursing. Communicate educational needs when necessary. Maintain contact availability for schedule changes when needed. Must be flexible in scheduling to the requirements of the unit assigned.
- Provide basic psychosocial support and counseling.
- Report and record all changes observed in condition or behavior of patients.
- Prepare patients for surgery by wash, shave, and ensure aseptic incision sites.
- Assist in the preparation, care for, and disposal of specimens taken for laboratory analysis and helps apply dressings.
- Comply with established medication use policies.
- Strictly adhere to all policies and practices relative to patient care and hospital related information.
- Respond to emergent situations and initiates appropriate actions.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated competence in operating room professional nursing practice.
- Minimum of 3 years operating room nursing experience is required.
- Must be able to circulate independently in general surgery, GYN surgery, Orthopedic, and urology surgery cases.
- Must be able to pass all UPMC required testing for Registered Nurses.
- SWAT Nurses must agree to be available to work 72 hours in a bi-weekly pay period and will follow the scheduling requirements of the operating room department assigned.
- The ability to scrub in any specialty is preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
