University of Pittsburgh Physicians is seeking a full-time Lead Telephone Operator to support the Office of Referring Physician Relations (OPR) at Forbes Tower in Oakland!


Under direct supervision, the Lead Telephone Operator serves as the main point of contact with the public and with all hospital departments in routine, as well as emergency, situations. This position acts as a resource for other Telephone Operators, trains new operators, handles escalated issues and risk management calls, and schedules switchboard coverage. As an essential member of the team, the Lead Telephone Operator will apply judgment and prioritization skills to ensure efficient and quality customer service, while minimizing risks and delays.


The Lead Telephone Operator will work primarily 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. shifts, Tuesday through Saturday. This individual must have availability to work all shifts for as-needed coverage to support the 24/7-operational office, as well.

The ideal candidate for this position will have exceptional customer service, phone etiquette, and multitasking skills. Proficient computer and typing skills are preferred, as well, while a high level of professionalism is vital to this role. 

  • Maintain current procedures for internal and external disasters, fire emergencies, bomb scares, and disaster plans.
  • Provide relief coverage to support staff.
  • Perform all functions of Telephone Operator.
  • Monitor new employee training and certify trainee competencies through demonstration of performance.
  • Handle immediate problems and direct problems to department head.


  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Three years of experience answering and processing calls through automated phone system.  
  • Must be able to work all shifts, seven days a week.  
  • Ability to interpret procedure manuals (i.e. fire, trouble, disaster, etc.).
  • Exceptional phone communication skills/etiquette highly preferred.
  • Exceptional customer service skills highly preferred.
  • Proficient computer skills preferred.
