Description

Purpose:
The Pharmacy Technician, Associate provides pharmaceutical care to patients within the UPMC Health System by assisting with sterile and nonsterile medication preparation, medication filling, and medication distribution. The Pharmacy Technician, Associate services are provided in compliance with the Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations.

Responsibilities:

  • General: Procure and maintain adequate inventory levels on daily basis in applicable areas such as pharmacy medication stock rooms, automated medication carousels, and automated dispensing machines.

  • General: Practice appropriate hand hygiene both in the pharmacy and in the units.
  • General: Ensure that all medications in all areas have been safely and securely stored according to Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations.
  • General: Assist in the training of pharmacy personnel and students.
  • General: comply with Federal and State laws such as HIPAA, regulations such as OSHA, and PBM contracting requirements such as FWA and CMS.
  • General: Participate in departmental quality improvement activities in order to continually improve and evaluate pharmaceutical care as reflected by operational and patient care indicators.
  • Filling: Assist in filling medication orders through correct labeling, counting and stocking practices. Initial and date products as required.
  • General: Provide and received information (via telephone, person-to-person, or written) to hospital personnel, patients and visitors. Refer all drug information questions to Staff Pharmacists.
  • General: Maintain all patient information and records. Maintain the pharmacy computer system as required.
  • General: Maintain all pertinent documentation as required. This includes eye wash logs, refrigerator logs, perpetual inventory logs etc.
  • Distribution: Develop and maintain positive and productive service relationships during medication distribution process.
  • General: Develop and maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked work environment.
  • General: Use computer skills to process and maintain all patient information and records.
  • Understands and performs packaging responsibilities to assure that all packaging is done with patient safety parameters as ultimate goal. Accurately packages and barcodes each individual oral solid, oral liquid and injectable dosage forms for distributi
  • Consistently follows departmental procedures to ensure all medication is packaged accurately with a high level of skill and expertise in accordance with Central packaging policies, state and federal regulations.
  • Prepares and maintains packager equipment for daily use. Performs and document regular cleaning and maintenance activities of packaging machines.
  • Prepares reports as required to support packaging activities.
  • Is current on all packaging systems (i.e., Pak-Plus tablet packaging machine, over wrap packagers, Euclid tablet/capsule packager, the Euclid wet cadet, and all other packaging equipment available to the operations, efficient production of Robot Ready, B
  • Demonstrates the ability to ensure adequate medication supplies are packaged and available for distribution to site hospitals via parameters established (max/par; low/out sheet, etc)
  • Accurately completes and records all information for inventory control as required.

Qualifications

  • Completion of high school diploma or equivalent required AND one of the following:
    • Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program
    • Six months of previous pharmacy technician experience
    • Six months of experience as a Pharmacy Assistant within the UPMC Health System
    • Enrollment in a college program and in good standing
