Description
Purpose:
Works with expectant women and their partners to share evidence-based information about caring for their newborn. Using tactful discussion, demonstration and class participation to teach basic skills such as bathing, diapering, cord care, and feeding. Also addressed are normal newborn behaviors, symptoms of illness, how to stimulate learning, safety, and more. Education includes lecture/discussion, appropriate audio/visual materials, demonstration/return-demonstration, and handouts.
Responsibilities:
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Collaborates with UPMC Pinnacle?s educators from other birthing locations to make system wide improvements to the WomanCare Program.
- Participates in opportunities for observation on Maternal/Child Health Units, as appropriate.
- Stays current with recommendations from ACOG and AWHONN and updates class curriculum as necessary.
- Complies will annual PPD testing and flu vaccine policies
- Completes mandatory computer-based training in a timely manner.
- Must attend at least three Parent/Child Educator Quarterly Updates each year. Accumulates continuing education as required to maintain nursing license.
- Respects and maintains customer confidentiality.
- Maintains professionalism in dress and manner.
- Reviews evaluations with Parent/Child Education Supervisor to identify areas for improvement based on class participant feedback.
- Keeps accurate records of class attendance and submits the class roster along with class evaluations to the Parent/Child Education Supervisor in a timely manner.
- Is aware of varying needs and goals of class participants and adjusts class content to meet those needs. Allows class participants to identify their own strengths and aspirations and set their own goals accordingly.
- Identifies specific needs or problems of class participants and refers appropriately.
- Works with class participants to enable them to make informed decisions for themselves and their baby and feel confident in their ability to care for their newborn
- Educates class participants on benefits for mom, baby, and family of giving birth, at a Baby Friendly Designated Facility
- Teaches childbirth and parenting classes in a way that reflects UPMC Pinnacle?s Mission, Vision and Values philosophy.
Qualifications
Current Pennsylvania Registered Nurse license.
Preferred Prior experience in Maternal/Newborn care.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Clearances must be dated within 90 days
