UPMC Western Maryland is searching for a Patient Safety Technician to support our Clinical Resource Team. This position is primarily evening/varied shifts.

Sign-On Bonus Details 

• $5,000 sign-on bonus

Purpose:
The Patient Safety Technician, under the direction of a Nurse Manager, Charge Nurse, Unit Coordinator and/or Staff Nurse, is responsible for providing direct patient care as defined in the Department of Nursing philosophy and objectives. The Patient Safety Technician performs a variety of duties and technical tasks structured to assist patients and other healthcare providers. These tasks are necessary to support the ongoing care of hospital patients. When necessary to complete required job activities, the Patient Safety Technician may have access or be granted limited access to medication storage areas. No high risk or high diversion potential medications will be unsecured in the medication storage areas where non-clinical staffmay be permitted.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists and shows good judgment in analyzing problems and taking appropriate action in both routine and emergency situations.
  • Communicates effectively and appropriately.
  • Uses good judgment as to what to communicate to whom as well as the best way to get that accomplished.
  • Speaks in a clear and credible manner, selecting the right tone for the situation and audience.
  • Listens to others and allows them to make their point.
  • Demonstrates the essential skills related to the use of all equipment connected to job responsibilities.
  • Displays an appropriate level of concern for various safety factors when using equipment.
  • Operates highly complex equipment in a highly efficient manner to ensure high-quality results.
  • Maintains equipment for properly by cleaning daily and noting any system problems to alert department manager .
  • Handles sensitive or difficult issues with diplomacy and confidence.
  • Remains clearheaded and focused and inspires others to do the same.
  • Remains objective in the face of strong emotions.
  • Can acknowledge strong emotions without being unduly influenced by their intensity.
  • Practices within scope of licensure, certification, and/or job description.
  • Takes personal responsibility fo rpatient care and safety.
  • Complies with National Patient Safety Goals and other regulatory standards.
  • Includes safety assessments and planning for all activities and services being provided.
  • Speaks up, and encourages patients and family members to do likewise, if safety is a concern.
  • Promptly reports safety risks and takes appropriate action to reduce these risks.

 

Qualifications

  • Certified Nursing Assistant Program and Certification through the Maryland Board of Nursing.
  • BLS-Basic Life Support Certification required, but will provide training if necessary .
  • 6 Months successful experience as a Nursing Assistant in a general hospital preferred.
  • Experience as a student nurse is an acceptable substitute for a Nursing Assistant Class. The student must have successfully completed the Fundamentals of Nursing Care and obtained a Nursing Assistant Certification from the Maryland Board of Nursing.
  • Certain certifications require additional experience for recertification.
  • Previous experience working with behavioral health patients is preferred.
  • Aggression management, patient hygiene, physical comfort, mobility, monitoring safety, feeding patients,obtaining specimens, obtaining accu-checks, blood pressures, vital signs, height, weight and other delegated tasks as allowed by the Maryland Nurse Practice Act.
