We're looking for a Senior Manager, Research Writer to join our UPMC Quality Team.  This is a writing intensive position and we're seeking an individual with an extensive writing background.

In this role, The Senior Manager of Research Communications at the Wolff Center will identify, write, and coordinate scientific publications that communicate UPMC's significant quality, safety and innovative advances. This writing-intensive position will serve as a respected expert in communicating accurate, clear, and compelling content for manuscripts, presentations, grants and other content as it relates primarily to health care quality and improvement practices, and will report to the Wolff Center's Senior Director of Clinical Improvement, and Matrix to UPMC Public Relations.

  • The Senior Manager shall assume responsibility for identifying and communicating--primarily through high-impact, published research--innovations and advances in clinical quality and safety at UPMC to advance the health systems strategic goals.
  • To this end, the manager in this role will:  
    • Identify meaningful research findings worthy of publication that advance UPMC's clinical and reputational goals. 
    • Tell the story expressed in UPMC's quality and clinical data and advise on the best options for conveying that story to UPMC's target audiences.
    • Engage and motivate a cadre of subject matter experts across clinical disciplines and service lines who can contribute to writing and dissemination of scientific knowledge.
    • Apply scientific principles and biomedical knowledge to understand, organize, and describe complex data for scientific, medical, and lay audiences.
    • Write and coordinate research manuscripts and other key documents.
    • Provide such leadership for required document preparation, including organizing document preparation, interpreting scientific and statistical data, writing the documents, and ensuring their review by relevant parties.
    • Develop and direct publications and presentations committee, including designation of individual writing groups, and policies and procedures for publications.
    • Coordinate with Wolff Center leadership and UPMC Public Relations/Marketing to ensure appropriate dissemination of research findings.
    • Oversee objective measurement of the impact of Wolff Center publications and presentations.
    • Collaborate with investigators across UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences.


  • Advanced degree in a health science discipline, PhD highly preferred.
  • Eight years of combined experience in general writing and a minimum of three in research writing required.
  • Strong health science research and health systems background with evidence of scholarly peer-reviewed publications and presentations, including dissemination across multi-media formats.
  • Must have demonstrated evidence of outstanding written and oral presentation skills and ability to work effectively in complex, matrixed academic medical center or other health care industry setting.
  • Project management experience and facilitation skills highly desired.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and work independently on complex tasks.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office suite and clinical databases.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret an extensive variety of scientific, technical, financial, and legal documents.
