Lead Radiation Therapist - ONC - (Radiation Therapy)



UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is currently hiring for a regular Full Time Lead Radiation Therapist to support the Radiation Oncology Network office located at UPMC Passavant in McCandless, PA.

This position will work a regular Full Time daylight schedule Monday through Friday.
The incumbent will ensure quality, accurate treatment delivery, to act as a technical resource for staff therapist and to troubleshoot daily operational issues.

  • Continuing Education Program ManagementActs as an educational resource for staff therapist for existing and new technologies.Participates in training programs required to maintain ARRT Certification.Performs in accordance with system wide competencies / behaviors. Attends all required developmental courses as directed by the site manager.Demonstrates a desire for self-development by making active efforts to improve and acquire additional skills and knowledge. Stays current with developments is radiation oncology.
  • Regulatory Affairs ManagementParticipates in regulatory compliance activities and maintains continuous departmental readiness for inspections and surveys.Works in conjunction with the site safety coordinator to ensure regulatory readiness.Follows all radiation safety standards.Wears radiation monitoring badge and I.D. badge at all times.Communicates any equipment issues to the appropriate site leadership.Prepares patient charts for weekly chart rounds for current machine assignment
  • Clinical Operations (cont):Completes and reconciles the daily treatment schedule. Maintains a safe, orderly treatment area. Under the direction of the Radiation Oncology Manager and Chief Therapist provides On Call coverage as needed.Remains HIPAA compliant at all times. Maintains professional rapport with technologists, nurses, and all other personnel assigned to the departmentCompletes clinical competencies annually as required.Has a good understanding of information systems and is fluent in all computer applications necessary to perform their job. All other duties as assigned
  • Quality Assurance / CQI Program ManagementPrioritizes patient safety. . Performs and documents daily and weekly QA activity for assigned equipment. Documents findings outside the range established by Physics. Notifies the Chief Therapist immediately of findings outside the normal range of operations. Assists in programs to measure and improve the quality of care within the Department, such as Press Ganey, Quality Improvement Measures, Chart Rounding, and Department Meetings.Performs or assigns weekly on-treatment patient chart review to verify accuracy and completeness of treatment record.Engages in the establishment of CQI projects and participates as an active member of the CQI team as assigned.Works collaboratively with the manager to develop flowcharts and utilize established flowcharts to ensure standardization of care.Works collaboratively with the Radiation Oncologist, Manager, and all team members to maintain high standards for quality service.
  • Clinical Operations (cont):Collaborates with the physician, chief therapist and other departmental personnel to maintain quality initiatives in order to improve treatment delivery standards.Assists in the development and implementation of new programs/services, and provides recommendations to department leadership,Explains treatment procedures to patient and/or family. Responds effectively to patient concerns, and refers medical questions to appropriate personnel. Maintains competency and proficiency in all treatment modalities available in the department and serves as a daily resource for staff radiation therapists by providing effective feedback.Assists in the orientation and supervision of students during clinical rotations. Assists the Chief Therapist in evaluation of student performance. Uses effective communication techniques and interpersonal skills to provide explanations for treatment-related procedures. Observes patients for expected and unexpected reactions to treatments and communicates this to appropriate staff members. Reinforces patient education/side effect management information and indicates non-compliance to medical/nursing staff.
  • Clinical Operations:Performs external beam treatment, simulation, fabrication of immobilization devices and shielding, radio surgery, and brachytherapy procedures when applicable, according to written prescription and treatment plan. Performs measurements for use during treatment calculation. Collects and documents data acquired during the simulation procedure and accurately inputs treatment-related data. Provides safety in patient care through the consistent practice of Departmental Procedures for treatment administration. Recognizes deviation from prescribed treatment delivery and reports all deviations to the Chief Therapist / Physicist. Through daily oversight, assures the quality of treatment delivery via the complete and accurate documentation of treatment records. Ensures the quality and consistency of treatment by verifying portal films are acquired and approved according to departmental procedures.
  • Fiscal ResponsibilitiesParticipates in accurate and complete charge capture activities.Participates in chart audits to ensure accurate and complete documentation of charge capture activities.Participates in weekly on-treatment patient chart review to verify accuracy and completeness of patient record.Notifies appropriate site leadership of supply needs.Maintains T & R expenses according to policy.Uses all UPMC CC resources effectively


  • Completion of a formal radiation therapy technology program in a JRCERT-accredited institution.
  • 3 years of experience in Radiation Therapy.
  • Involvement in each of the following areas: Administration/Management, Education/International, Quality/Regulatory, and Billing/Coding.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
ARRT Registration in good standing or Board Eligibility within six months of hire. Must maintain 24 CEU's per Biennium as required for ARRT Certification and Licensure.CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
