UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is seeking a Full-time General Maintenance to support the Plant Maintenance Management department!
This position will work Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. through 2:00 p.m. but must be flexible to the needs of the hospital. Snow removal in the winter is a primary responsibility and does require call-outs any day at any time. Hours are subject to change based on business needs.
This position performs a variety of duties in and around the building and grounds of the hospital complex.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in keeping the Hospital well illuminated.
- Fill out lamp replacement forms.
- Make simple repairs under direct supervision.
- Complete work tickets with appropriate information.
- Cut, trim, prune, cultivate, fertilize, and care for grass, flowers, shrubs, and trees.
- Responsible for following the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
- Maintain vehicles and equipment in a clean, orderly manner.
- Demonstrates safe work habits.
- Remove snow from driveways and parking areas; apply deicing ingredients.
- Smooth and remove old paint; fill nail holes, cracks, and joints with putty or other filler to prepare surfaces for sealer; and primers or finish coat.
- Operate hospital trucks, tractors, and snow removal equipment.
- Apply coats of paint, varnish, stains, enamels, or lacquer to decorate and protect interior and exterior surfaces.
- Assist other crafts in completing their duties.
- Remove refuse from roofs, gutters, and downspouts, and outside sewers.
- Order necessary parts and material through established procedures.
- Prepare paint to match specified colors by blending and mixing required portions of pigment, oil and thinning and drying substances.
- Pick up and delivers furniture and equipment for repair.
Qualifications
- High School or equivalent.
- One-year experience in a health-related environment to acquire a working knowledge of hospital maintenance procedures and suitable analytical and interpersonal skills.
- Familiarity with horticulture and gardening subjects.
- Ability to understand and comply with oral and written instruction.
- Understanding of the importance of electrical safety.
- Physical ability to stand for prolonged periods and push, carry or haul a variety of large objects, i.e. cart, ladders, building materials.
- Ability to work under supervision when working with the other crafts and mechanics.
- Ability to perform a variety of activities according to specific assignments.
- Ability to apply paint on surfaces.
- Ability to detect difference in mixed and sample colors.
- Ability to use tools such as putty knives, sanding machines, scrapers, paintbrushes, and rollers, and to operate power equipment.
- Ability to determine arrangements and positioning of garden planting.
- Ability to use mowers, tractors and other power and hand tools related to performing duties.
- Ability to resolve problems and refer difficult or unusual problems to the Assistant Director.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate and cooperate with various levels of hospital personnel, physicians, and patients to complete work in occupied areas in a tactful and courteous manner.
- May in the course of their duties be in rooms where medications are stored. No contact with medications is allowed.
