Description

The UPMC Shadyside Family Health Center provides over 26,000 patient visits per year in a well-organized and comfortable setting. The Center maintains relationships with many nearby service organizations and facilities, the Pittsburgh Women's Shelter, organizations serving the LGBT community, Alpha House Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation programs, and Carnegie Mellon University. 

Purpose:
Direct the implementation of the Family Medicine (FM) Residency Behavioral Science curriculum in cooperation with the faculty psychiatrist. Provide leadership and maintenance of the video precepting program for residents' interviewing skills. Oversee the monthly Behavioral Science conferences and present conferences at least bi-monthly. Provide direct supervision to the family health center behavioral health staff (including the Social Worker, Medical Assisted Treatment Care Coordinator and Behavioral Health Coordinator). 

Responsibilities:

  • Direct the ongoing design implementation of the FM Residency Behavioral Science curriculum in cooperation with the faculty psychiatrist. Oversee regularly scheduled Behavioral Science conferences and present conferences at least bi-monthly. Provide leadership and maintenance of the video precepting program. Provide direct supervision to the family health center behavioral health staff (including the Social Worker, Medication Assisted Treatment Care Coordinator and Behavioral Health Coordinator).
  • Review, revise, and upgrade Behavioral Science Curriculum when warranted by new mental health advances relevant to the practice of Family Medicine and/or all relevant governing bodies (e.g. ACGME, RRC, and the Residency Program)
  • Additional specific faculty duties include: advise Family Medicine faculty on behavioral issues; oversee the process of achieving interviewing competencies for family medicine residents and medical students; train residents in appropriate primary care office-based behavioral health interventions, and work collaboratively with the psychiatrist on behavioral health components of the psychiatry rotation. 
  • General faculty duties include: creating evaluation methods for relevant ACGME competencies; provide scholarly mentorship to resident quality improvement projects related to behavioral health care at the family health center (including generation of grant funding to support QI projects); present scholarly work at regional and/or national conferences (such as FMEC, STFM, Behavioral Science Forum), participate in recruitment events (interviewing applicants for the residency program to provide them with information regarding the Behavioral Science aspect of training and evaluating applicants' potential contribution to the program).
  • Provide psychosocial support for family medicine residents and assist in identification and triage planning for residents who demonstrate psychological and/emotional difficulty. Maintain stress management programs, including critical incident debriefing as needed. Help plan and implement yearly team-building retreats for faculty and residents. Lead regularly scheduled support groups and Balint groups for residents. 
  • Identify patients and families at the Family Health Center with behavioral health problems. Provide care for these patients and families by developing a treatment plan and implementing this in collaboration with resident physicians. Precept residents to insure Behavioral Science learning in patient care.
  • Maintain academic standards and develop presentations for peer groups, including faculty development presentations
  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree or Ph.D. in a Behavioral/Mental Health field required
  • At least ten years post-Master's experience including work in psychiatric and/or medical settings preferred.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) OR Licensed Psychologist OR Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
