Outreach Worker/Educ Coord

Responsible for increasing awareness of program services among the coal mining population including currently employed and retired miners. Counsels prospective and enrolled patients as to the financial and medical benefits available to them and the procedures to be followed in the pursuit of these benefits. Provides outreach and benefits counseling under the direction of the Coordinator of the Black Lung Program, the Manager and the Medical Director.



  • Prepares and maintains travel log and outreach activity records, including visits to outside agencies, as required by the program.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in response to outreach and educational program demands, which may be on weekends or evenings, as needed.
  • Attend seminars and meetings as appropriate.
  • Outreach to active mine sites, Mine Safety and Health, active and retired United Mine Workers of America.
  • Educate the public on lung disease and smoking cessation.
  • Maintain equipment and provide spirometry screens as needed.
  • Conduct informational outreach events and provide accurate information about benefits and eligibility.
  • Perform patient testing as needed.
  • Coordinate structured educational events.
  • Collaborate with local officials, attorneys, and the Department of Labor.
  • Assists with immunization program, distribution of advertisements and completion of paperwork.
  • Travel as needed to various outreach locations and events.



At least two years' experience in coal mine industry or other related position or field preferred.

Knowledge of mining communities and of existing laws/benefits related to Black Lung Disease.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills including writing skills preferred.

Ability to work well with potential or current patients who have limited education.

Proven ability to serve as liaison with media representatives, public officials, and others.

Certified Respiratory Therapist or Registered Respiratory Therapist Preferred. Must have a current PA license in Respiratory Care.

Must have a clean driving record.

Must have own transportation.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Driver's License
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
  • Act 34
