The Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) is a registered nurse who provides non-judgmental, compassionate, trauma informed care to patients who were a victim of violence.  This includes but not limited to sexual assaults, child abuse, elder abuse, human trafficking, and intimate partner violence/domestic violence, and strangulation.  Required to travel to all seven UPMC hospital campuses that include Harrisburg, Community General, West Shore, Carlisle, Hanover, Memorial, and Lititz.  Provides medical forensic exam, coordinating treatment of injuries, documentation of biological and physical findings, collect forensic evidence, photographic documentation, and prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, referrals for medical and psychological follow-up, community outreach, and testify in court.  The FNE is expected to follow protocols established by the Medical Director and/or management of the Forensic Nursing Department for which the FNE is employed.

The FNE performs follows up calls on the ED and ED Observation positive culture and infection control results.  The culture results follow up are rotated among the FNEs and will be performed at Harrisburg Hospital.

When the FNE assists to the ED and ED Observation.  The FNE will communicate with the charge nurse when she is on site to acquire where support is needed.  The FNE can support the staff in patient care, waiting room rechecks, triage/PIT, and alerts (stroke, STEMI, trauma, etc.) and methotrexate administration (ED OBS).  FNE should not be assuming primary nursing assignments.

Two years of nursing experience preferred.

Valid driver’s licenses required for this position 

Completion of a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training by a recognized program

Ability to plan, organizes, and works autonomously.

Demonstrated initiative, resourcefulness and good judgment in executing the role and responsibilities of a forensic nurse examiner.


The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below. They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patients status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patients requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures. Minimum six months experience. BSN preferred. Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families. Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment. Good clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care. Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process. Mobility and visual manual dexterity. Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
UPMC approved national certification preferred. Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse either in the state where the facility is located or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement with the state where the facility is located. CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

Clearances must be dated within 90 days

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
