Student Psych Assistant

Description

UPMC McKeesport s hiring a casual Student Psych Asssistant to help support the Psych Unit for its McKeesport location. This position will work rotating 8 hour shifts including weekends/holidays.

Purpose:
The employee in the Student Nursing Assistant position is in a limited part-time position, which under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, assists in the provision of medical and psychiatric patient care. The incumbent receives practical experience relevant to their formal education track and career goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborative Practice Maintains on-going communication with the treatment team and charge nurse regarding observations of patients' medical and behavioral symptoms and the care provided.
  • Transformational Leadership Takes initiative to ensure that unit environment is maintained.
  • Care Delivery Encourages patients to perform or assists them in the performance of activities of daily living. Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment. Assists in the implementation and maintenance of the milieu program providing a consistent and therapeutic approach to patient care. Manages crisis situations effectively using positive approaches. Assists the nurse and other direct care staff in the provision of physical care and clinical intervention as assessed by client needs. Documents in the medical record according to established policies
  • Professional Growth Maintains competency requirements. Learns and utilizes up-to-date technology and practices in the delivery of patient care. Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Current full-time enrollment or recent graduate from an accredited nursing school or in a health-related baccalaureate or more advanced degree program. Preference in hiring will be given to nursing students.
  • Must be available and agree to work weekends and holidays. Must be able to work overtime as required by UPMC McKeesport. May in the course of their job duties be in rooms where medications are stored.
  • No contact with medications is allowed. In the course of duties may be asked to distribute medications to the nurse at the bedside. Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Crisis Management training required within 60 days of hire

CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
 

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC)
  • Act 34
  • OAPSA
