University of Pittsburgh Physicians is hiring a full-time Physician Assistant or Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner to help support the CCM department.
Advanced Practice Provider Resident in a UPMC business unit for a period of 52 weeks, or longer in the event of health, academic necessity or program discretion.
12 month postgraduate training program for APPs sponsored by the UPMC Department of Critical Care Medicine. This program is designed to attract and provide advanced training in critical care medicine to highly motivated physician assistants (PAs) and certified registered nurse practitioners (CRNPs). Based on the Department’s Multidisciplinary Critical Care Training Program (MCCTP) for physicians, the residents will train alongside their physician counterparts to learn intensive care medicine across a broad patient population including medical, general/cardiac/specialty surgical, trauma, solid organ transplant, and neurocritical care among others.
CCM education, code response, Procedures including intubation, central lines, arterial lines. bed ICU, round with team during the day and night coverage and management by APP
The goals of our program are to recruit high-quality, motivated advanced practice providers; provide residents with world-class training in critical care medicine based on current scientific knowledge of the field; provide residents with a unique critical care learning experience tailored to his/her professional interests and goals and to develop efficient, knowledgeable and confident providers capable of effective patient management within their scope of practice.

Responsibilities:
- Consults with attending physician or designee upon the identification of significant unexpected changes in patient status.
- Performs selected invasive patient care procedures based on the patients' needs as determined collaboratively by the physician supervisor and the Allied Health Credentialing Committee of the medical staff. Documents procedures, patient response/s and results in the patient record.
- As a graduate medical learner, follow work hour requirements set forth by the academic program as determined by the program director and the Medical Director within the work hour guidelines as set forth by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
- Participates in an educational program provided by the UPMC business unit, and is expected to satisfy the academic requirement of the program, as determined by the Program Director and the Medical Director.
- Under the direction and in consultation/collaboration with the attending physician or designee, diagnoses medical conditions and plans interventions, documents and communicates information to the health care team, and documents patient care services with a daily dictated or electronically generated note that conforms to documentation guidelines.
- Provides instructions, information and support to the patient/family regarding medications and treatments.
- Administers medications and injections in compliance with state law and hospital guidelines.
- Performs complete physical examinations and obtains complete medical history and records findings. Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures. Interprets and integrates data to determine preliminary diagnosis and therapeutic plan for critically ill or injured patients.
- Provides continuity of patient care in collaboration with other health care professionals as appropriate.
Qualifications
A graduate of a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) is required or Completion of an Accredited Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program for Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (NNP)BS or MS Candidate is preferred for PA, MS required for NNPEligible for clinical privileges as a member of the Affiliate Staff by the Medical Staff Office Eligible for Pennsylvania Prescriptive Authority and federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration Must be recommended for appointment by the Program Director and satisfy academic programmatic requirements in order to maintain employment
Licensure, Education, Certifications, and Clearances
CRNP:
- The successful completion of an approved nurse practitioner program is required
- BSN, MSN is preferred
- Professional nursing experience and/or nurse practitioner experience is preferred
- Current state RN license and CRNP certification are required
- National certification, eligible for licensure by Pennsylvania board of nursing, eligible for certification as a CRNP by Pennsylvania state board of nursing
- Current CPR certification is required
- Act 33 Clearance will be required
- Act 73 Clearance will be required
- Act 34 Clearance required
- ACNP Preferred
PA:
- A graduate of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the physician assistant (ARC-PA) is required
- BS or MS candidate is preferred
- Experience as a physician assistant and/or experience in a clinical setting is preferred
- Current state PA license certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required
- Current CPR certification is required
- Act 33 Clearance will be required
- Act 73 Clearance will be required
- Act 34 Clearance required
