Veterinary Technician


UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is seeking a Full-time Veterinary Technician to support the Animal Facility department!

This position will work Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with rotating 4-hour weekend shifts. Hours are subject to change based on business needs.

The MWRI lab animal facility strives to provide a safe and enriching environment for our research animals. We take our husbandry and enrichment protocols above and beyond. Our veterinary care is held to the highest standards to ensure our animals are healthy and happy.

The Veterinary Technician provides appropriate care and medical treatment to the laboratory animals.


  • Performs and records all quality controls instituted to ensure test validity, i.e., standards in responsible handling, processing, and testing laboratory animals.
  • Responsible for the psychological well-being of non-human primates, i.e., enrichment program.
  • Responsible for the health and well-being of all laboratory animals. Performs para-veterinary procedures as necessary to maintain the health of laboratory animals. Provides neonatal care to offspring of departmental sub-human primate colony.
  • Responsible for laboratory procedures such as a fecal, urinalysis, blood withdrawals, and tissue collecting.
  • Responsible for assisting with the development, implementation, and maintenance of the animal care program.
  • Attends annual Hospital and departmental fire/safety and infection control training and maintains current knowledge of safety procedures within the Hospital and department.
  • Administers medications and restraints, or performs euthanasia on animals under prescribed regimens.
  • Provides care, feeding, and watering of primates.
  • Responsible for interacting with investigators regarding the appropriate use of animals in research.
  • Responsible for sterile surgical services, assisting with pre-op, anesthesia, surgery, and post-op.
  • Observes all animals to evaluate health status for experiment or diagnostic purposes.


  • Program completion of a Veterinary Technology or medical field (emergency medicine, health sciences, etc.) program and one-year experience working in a multi-species animal facility required.
