If you are passionate about helping others, becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is for you!  UPMC Senior Communities offers two pathways to become a Certified Nursing Assistant, both offering “earn while you learn.” You can:


  1. Attend a Nursing Assistant Student class
  2. Take the Accelerated Online Training Program (available only for a limited time during the pandemic)


Both options provide you with the skills and knowledge to become a Certified Nursing Assistant.  As a Nursing Assistant Student with UPMC Senior Communities, you will be responsible for:

  • Promptly reporting to class/work site as assigned
  • Providing resident care under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse/instructor 
  • Demonstrating the UPMC values and working cooperatively and pleasantly with staff, residents, family members, and instructors 
  • Confidentially maintaining resident information always 
  • Successfully completing the training program and competency requirements

OPTION 1: Nurse Assistant Student Class 

  1. UPMC Senior Communities CNA classes are offered at the following locations: Canterbury Place in Lawrenceville, Asbury Heights in Mt. Lebanon, Sherwood Oaks and Cranberry Place in Cranberry Township, Avalon Springs Place in Mercer, and Sugar Creek Station in Franklin.
  2. Attend classes Monday through Friday for 16 days, during the daylight shift, receiving both classroom and clinical training.
  3. Maintain perfect attendance and punctuality.
  4. Upon completion of classes, begin orienting at your facility.
  5. You will be scheduled to take the State Certification Exam, and upon successful completion, you will be added to the Pennsylvania CNA Registry.


OPTION 2: Accelerated Online Training Program (limited time offering)

  1. Complete the eight-hour on-line training approved by the State and successfully pass the post-test (
  2. Work along-side a preceptor to complete the competency skills checklist.
  3.  Upon successful completion, you will be added to the Pennsylvania CNA Registry.

Classes and exams are paid for by UPMC. Once you begin at a facility, you are able to transition to a full-time, part-time, or casual position as desired and as available. Opportunities for advancement in the CNA role begin as early as six months after being certified. UPMC offers great benefits, including tuition reimbursement.

To qualify for potential job opportunities we have, you would need the following:

  • High school diploma/GED preferred
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing
  • Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques (Preferred)


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • If entering position as part of CNA training program, employee has 120 days to obtain 
  • CNA Students entering Nurse Aide Training classes who have residency in PA must have a Photo ID with a PA address.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
  • Act 34
  • OAPSA 
  • Act 14
