Database Coordinator


The Women’s Biobehavioral Health Laboratory (Thurston Lab) is devoted to understanding and enhancing women’s health at midlife and beyond. The lab is within the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh. The Database Coordinator will be responsible for the development, support, maintenance, and implementation of the research project database using Access, SQL & SAS. 

This position is grant funded.


  • Design and maintain study MS Access and SQL databases.
  • Ensure accuracy of database integrity and ensure quality control. Collaborate with study staff members to ensure accuracy and completeness of study data.
  • Run standard weekly data reports for collected data.
  • Routinely review database / Perform quality checks and troubleshoot issues.
  • Maintain database documentation, including data-related manuals of operations.
  • Prepare analytic datasets (SAS, SPSS) for the Principal Investigators, senior statisticians, and collaborating investigators.
  • Assist with data coding, data scoring, data entry.
  • Produce ad-hoc reports and projects as needed.
  • Familiarity with software packages: Access, SQL, SAS required; MATLAB and SPSS preferred.


  • Typically, has completed a four-year academic degree including courses in computer programming, systems analysis, system development, or systems engineering


  • Has acquired Core IT skills and knowledge via practical experience. Has mastered the essential knowledge base for an IT professional. Has mastered the essential IT principles and analytical rules that guide their application in practical situations.
  • Minimum of two years of work experience in a research project is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with software packages such as Access, SAS, SQL, and MATLAB preferred.
  • Able to perform basic/standard IT procedures and protocol.
  • Relies on buddy system/coach to demonstrate applied skills and to guide non-routine actions
  • Higher education (Bachelors/Masters) may be required per Grants. Bachelors required.
