UPMC Western Maryland is hiring a Chief, Physician Assistant to support our Heart and Vascular Institute, Cardiothoracic Surgery in Cumberland, Maryland.  This leadership role is Monday-Friday with weekend call, rotating 2-3 weeks.

Under the supervision of a surgeon, the Chief Physician Assistant provides diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive health care services to patients. Obtains medical histories, examines patients, orders and interprets tests, and orders treatments. Assists surgeon as first or second assistant in Operating Room. Provides pre- and post-op care to patients as needed and monitors progress during hospital stay. Serves as a physician extender by gathering the data necessary to implement the surgeon's therapeutic plan. In the role of patient advocate, the Physician Assistant is a confidant, advisor and liaison between patients and physicians. In addition to the Physician Assistant duties, s/he is responsible for the supervision of the practice Physician Assistants. The Chief Physician Assistant ensures all PA staff is trained to perform necessary skills competently. Provides an environment that is conducive to learning and is collaborative.

• Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families
• Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment
• Handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment
• Critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care
• Good clinical judgment
• Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and lead others in application of acceptable standards of practice
• Mobility and visual manual dexterity
• Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients

This position is dependent upon successful attainment and maintenance of hospital privileges, if applicable to the Business Unit practice

Qualifications

Minimum Education

Bachelors from a Physician Assistant/Surgical Assistant Program (Accredited) required. NCCPA - National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants

                 Required Licenses

[Maryland, United States] Physician Assistants PA - Physician Assistant License (Maryland)

 

Minimum Work Experience

Previous experience in cardiovascular/thoracic surgery preferred. Three years minimum experience as a Physician Assistant required.

              Required Skills

Must have comprehensive knowledge of pre-existing medical conditions that may affect surgical procedures and a working knowledge of major surgical complication and their treatment. Must have demonstrated competency in cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgical procedures and anatomy and the documented ability to harvest all native conduits used for coronary bypass grafting.
