Research Associate

Description

This is a research full-time position responsible for performing research-related and administrative functions in support of two Allegheny County Juvenile Court funded Programs. This Research Associate will work with Court-referred, juvenile sex offenders and their families, children with problematic sexual behaviors, and with juveniles who have engaged in fire setting behaviors and their families. This Research Associate will work in collaboration with trained probation officers from the Special Services Unit of the Northern Probation Office of the Allegheny County Juvenile Court, other members of the Juvenile Court, and with staff from the Office of Children, Youth and Families and providers both within and outside of the UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital community. This Research Associate will conduct assessments and gather research data via face-to-face interviews and self-report measures from a variety of data sources (e.g., youth, parents, teachers, referral sources, other collateral sources) utilizing both tablet computers and paper-and-pencil questionnaires. This Research Associate will maintain a flexible work schedule, including evenings, in order to meet the needs of the families and programs.

Purpose:

Assist in the execution of research protocols and services.

Responsibilities:

  • Contact and schedule potential participants from a designated pool of individuals who have agreed to be contacted for research studies.
  • Conduct subject searches to locate subjects who are unable to be contacted.
  • Explain research protocol and obtain informed consent from participants.
  • Conduct on-line and/or library searches as needed by the PI as necessary.
  • Perform phone interviews for research project protocol(s) as needed.
  • Maintain and update subject information database.
  • Conduct interviews with research participants under supervision as needed.
  • Additional Responsibilities:
  • To assist in the preparation and administration/completion of clinical-research intake and discharge assessments
  • designed to address the clinical and scientific mission of the programs.
  • Greet and check in clients and families in EpicCare when they arrive for appointments
  • Assist in coordinating and organizing assessment and treatment materials/procedures such as preparation and maintenance of clinical notes and client treatment group binders
  • Format and prepare documents for clinicians and other staff including but not limited to worksheets related to sessions, as well as summaries of the intake assessment results and discharge reports
  • To provide, as necessary and/or indicated, basic administrative support and liaison with others. This includes public relations efforts and efforts to procure needed resources, helping to organize all meetings, and raising system or collaboration issues
  • To maintain knowledge of all study procedures, and changes/revisions to written procedures, in order to communicate these changes and to answer questions accordingly
  • Attend team meeting regularly and prepare materials for such meetings
  • To monitor and ensure all data has been entered, verified, checked, cleaned and stored accurately and consistently in a timely fashion
  • Assist the Program Director, Program Manager and treatment clinicians with copying and filing documents
  • To work cooperatively with the full treatment team at SAFE/WPH and program staff/supervisors at the Court
  • Special Unit Services Unit in order to enrich the environment, enhance or treatment procedures and all related program operations
  • Attend weekly supervision meetings with Program Manager
  • Assist Program Manager in the training of new undergraduate interns in the programs in domains such as summarizing legal data or conducting assessment roles
  • Participate in clinical sessions with juveniles and their families as requested by the clinician or supervisor
  • Assist clinician teaching fire safety education sessions for juveniles engaging in fire setting behaviors and their families
  • To assist clinicians with session preparation and providing summaries of literature reviews as well as attending and summarizing webinars/conferences, presentations, etc.
  • Performs other related responsibilities as required in order to maintain smooth organization and flow of all programs

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in psychology, neuroscience, counseling, sociology or related research field or current enrollment in a related Bachelor's Degree program with direct experience in a research environment required.
  • Familiarity with computers and common software packages required
  • Prior related work experience in a research setting preferred
  • Working knowledge of research methodology strongly preferred

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year of experience working directly with children and/or families
  • Prior research experience, including conducting assessments, is strongly preferred
  • Proficiency at a mastery level of the following: Microsoft Office Package including but not limited to Word, Power Point, Excel and Microsoft Outlook

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC)
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
