Director, Operations

Description

Purpose:
Directs the provision of quality patient care for operational and essential service departments, consistent with the values and strategic plan, and in collaboration with the Vice President of Operations by identifying, analyzing, and refining clinical and system processes and operations to improve and ensure positive patient outcomes. Utilizes human and financial resources effectively to ensure the achievement of operational imperatives within the Hospital division

Responsibilities:

 

  • Coordinate departmental activities to enhance integration and efficiency within the hospital system.
  • Identify and define customer and market needs within the scope of departmental operations. Evaluate current services and develop business plans and operating objectives to define new services.
  • Coordinate hospital wide Essential Services Survey communication and leader rounding process.
  • Implement tactics of UPMC Experience to enhance employee and patient experience via improving turnover, patient experience scores, targeted quality metrics, and financial stewardship.
  • Participate in key strategic initiatives related to campus-wide construction projects and identify new business and service line growth opportunities.
  • Analyze clinical statistics and information to formulate conclusions and recommendations related to organizational operations. Provide detailed analysis of projects related to both internal and external environments. Provide support, preparation design of all correspondence and related documents to the VP of Operations.
  • Develop an annual operating plan, operating budget and capital budget, which support the hospital?s strategic plan.
  • Establish, in collaboration with physician department heads and managers, quality and service standards for the department(s). Develop systems to ensure that standards are maintained, and establish operating plans to address areas that do not meet standards.
  • Develop internal and external customer relationships (medical staff, employees, children and parents, payers). Identify customer needs, develop systems to monitor satisfaction and develop operating plans to address areas of dissatisfaction.
  • Streamline operational processes through continuous improvement to improve efficiency of individual patient case or episode of care and department operations.
  • Develop, review and approve departmental policies. Ensure consistent administration of standards, policies, and procedures. Communicate and enforce hospital policies and procedures.
  • Establish a collaborative relationship between physicians, employees and managers to assure that issues are identified, evaluated and resolved as a team. Ensure effective communication channels between physicians, employees and managers.
  • Develop internal and external customer relationships (medical staff, employees, children and parents, payers). Identify customer needs, develops systems to monitor satisfaction and develops operating plans to address areas of dissatisfaction.
  • Interview, hire and provide performance management to department employees. Mentor and evaluate performance for directors, managers and departmental staff. Establish development plans and support continuing education and training needs.
  • Identify and define customer and market needs within the scope of departmental operations. Evaluate current services and develop business plans and operating objectives to define new services.
  • Manage departmental compliance with regulatory and accrediting agency standards, guidelines and quality assurance standards. Ensure that all quality control tests and procedures are performed and documented.
  • Assist the Vice President in implementing the management plan within the UPMC Health System.
  • Assist the Vice President in addressing Medical Staff concerns.
  • Coordinates and handles special projects on behalf of the Vice President of the Hospital.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare administration or related field required,
  • Master's preferred.
  • 5 years of operational and/or clinical experience required including 5 years in a progressive leadership level position.
  • Prior hospital experience preferred.
  • Analytical ability necessary to evaluate staff, address and improve clinical and programmatic issues and devise solutions to complex problems.
  • Leadership ability to develop staff, establish and maintain standards of performance within a national context for professional nursing practice and comply with administrative requirements.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to effectively create relationships to support a healing environment with patients, families, staff, physicians and hospital personnel including senior management in both written and verbal communication.
