University of Pittsburgh Physicians is seeking a full-time MRI Research Technologist to support the Department of Radiology MR Research Center at UPMC Presbyterian!

Ideally, the MRI Research Technologist will have flexibility adjusting their schedule to accommodate research user imaging request timeframes, sometimes starting earlier in the mornings and/or ending later in the evenings to maintain productivity while working cohesively with the UPMC imaging network.

The MRI Research Technologist will perform a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative in the operation of MR equipment necessary for securing imaging of various portions of the body for use in the diagnosis of disease or injury. The MRI Research Technologist should be able to perform MR procedures at a technical level not requiring constant supervision, yet under the general direction of the supervisor.


    • Receive patients and verify identification and written orders for requested and approved procedures.
    • Explain procedures and answer patients' questions and concerns before performing the procedure.
    • Position patients, choose appropriate factors, and follow established protocols required to produce high-quality MR scans.
    • Complete requisition and charge vouchers according to department procedures.
    • Participate in the Patient Safety Program and the quality improvement program of the department and hospital activities.
    • Look continually for opportunities to improve processes and systems.
    • Perform job functions thoroughly and accurately.

    • Patient safety is addressed through marking sides on films, marking side site, and proper identification of patients.

    • Perform non-technical duties, as required.
    • Perform image post-processing, networking, and archiving, as needed.
    • Perform patient assessments, as needed.
    • Perform venipuncture and administer MR contrast as ordered by the radiologists.
    • Maintain working knowledge of scanning equipment and perform minor calibrations on the equipment and/or report the need for major services or repairs to proper personnel.
    • Operate and maintain monitoring equipment.




  • The MR Technologist must have satisfactorily completed formal training in a radiology-related program, i.e. Radiology or Nuclear Medicine with accreditation by the ARRT or NMTCB.
  • Required 18 months of radiology and/or Nuclear Medicine experience.
  • Formal MR training is highly recommended and MR experience preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • ARRT Certificate
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist
