Research Associate - PGS-RISE


The Research Associate will work on a new NIMH-funded research study of pregnant women and infants, directed by Dr. Irene Tung; this is a new sub-study of the Pittsburgh Girls Study (PGS), a large NIH-funded longitudinal study directed by Drs. Alison Hipwell and Kate Keenan in the Department of Psychiatry. The PGS includes a racially and socioeconomically diverse sample of 2,450 girls from Pittsburgh, PA who have been assessed annually for 20 years to track developmental patterns of stress and psychopathology. In this new sub-study focused on resilience in stressful environments during pregnancy (“PGS-RISE”), we will use cutting-edge mobile health assessment methods (e.g., wearable biosensors, ecological momentary assessment) to examine the impact of daily stress and resilience-promoting resources during pregnancy on offspring emotion regulation. The Research Associate will be helping to coordinate the new PGS-RISE sub study while working as part of the larger PGS Team. Responsibilities will include coordinating recruitment and data collection efforts; conducting phone screening and face-to-face interviews; providing instructions to participants on how to answer questions on the mobile app and use to wearable biosensor; managing, tracking, and processing/cleaning data collected via mobile apps, wearable biosensors, and psychophysiological assessment; assisting with maintenance and revision of IRB protocols; assisting investigators in grant and manuscript writing (e.g., conducting literature reviews, preparing tables); and assisting with general laboratory tasks for the PGS such as processing and organizing biospecimens (e.g., blood, saliva samples).

This position is grant funded.


  • Contact and schedule potential participants from a designated pool of individuals who have agreed to be contacted for research studies.
  • Conduct subject searches to locate subjects who are unable to be contacted.
  • Explain research protocol and obtain informed consent from participants.
  • Conduct on-line and/or library searches as needed by the PI as necessary.
  • Perform phone interviews for research project protocol(s) as needed.
  • Maintain and update subject information database.
  • Conduct interviews with research participants under supervision as needed.


  • Bachelors Degree in psychology, neuroscience, counseling, sociology or related research field or current enrollment in a related Bachelor's Degree program with direct experience in a research environment required.
  • Familiarity with computers and common software packages required.
  • Prior experience with recruitment/scheduling, phone and face-to-face participant interviews preferred.
  • Experience working with women and children preferred.
  • Experience with SPSS preferred.
  • Prior related work experience in a research setting preferred.
  • Working knowledge of research methodology strongly preferred.
