Digital Behavioral Health Coach


As a Digital Behavioral Health Coach within WPIC the expectation is to provide digital behavioral therapy through an electronic coaching portal, occasionally engaging in telephonic therapy. This position will support patients as they move through a digital Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) program. The Health Coach will motivate patients to practice digital behavioral therapy skills and to individualize these skills for their specific problems (e.g. anxiety, depression, chronic pain, etc.).


  • Develop and maintain awareness of and competence in the use of behavior modification and coaching skills. Develop and maintain knowledge of interventions for obesity, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, poor nutritional habits, diabetes, improving compliance to medication and/or medical regimens and utilizes this knowledge to assist the member to engage in healthier lifestyle habits. Develop and maintain knowledge of UPMC and community health resources. Accurately document member contacts in a timely fashion.
  • Work with Patients from multiple locations, within and outside of Pittsburgh area
  • Define health behaviors or concerns that would potentially improve health if targeted for change. Assess patients' readiness to address targeted risk factor(s) by reviewing patients mood scales and changes within the digital program .. Use critical thinking to identify the most appropriate action to assist members in improving their health.
  • 75% coaching 20% administrative 5% meetings. High technology fluency and comfort learning new applications. Be adaptable and thrive in a dynamic fast-paced environment.
  • Track member progress toward defined goals. Provide timely feedback to providers and other care teams about members' progress toward health behavior goals. Work collaboratively with other members of the Team. Communicates respectfully and acknowledges different perspectives. Mindful of how words and action impact others.
  • Ability to use workflows as a guide to action while using sound clinical judgment to proceed appropriately. Competently employ strategies for encouraging individuals to explore motivation for change and enhance readiness. Engage members who have specified risk factors in the collaborative development of a personalized behavior change plan to address the risk factor(s) in conjunction with other health care teams and their providers, if appropriate. Engage with members in regular contacts over time to assist them in implementing the change plan, tracking progress, and maintaining changes over time.
  • Review health risk assessment and health screening results
  • Competently employs motivational strategies that encourage individuals to explore motivation for change, enhance readiness and develop competence in use of behavioral change skills. Provides coaching in behavioral health programs such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse and PTSD with appropriate clinical supervision. Provides reports on coaching activities as requested.


  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Health Education, Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, Counseling, Social Work, Public Health or a related field required.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn a client-centered coaching approach that emphasizes nonjudgmental empathic interaction and collaborative development and implementation of behavior change plans with an emphasis on motivational interviewing and behavior change techniques.
  • Certification or licensure in the field of study or health coaching preferred.
  • Non-smoker.
  • Detail-oriented individual with excellent organizational skills. High level of oral communication skills.
  • Comfortable with digital based interactions.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Intermediate proficiency with MS Word and Outlook and ability to learn new computer-based documentation skills.
  • 2-years health-coach related experience preferred but not required.
  • Technology experience is a must.
  • Understanding of behavioral health diagnosis, signs and symptoms.

  • Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC)
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
