Crisis Clinician I - Part Time (Altoona Crisis Services)

Description

The Western Psychiatric Hospital Altoona Crisis Services is based at UPMC Altoona Hospital and covers the Blair County Community. The WPH Altoona Crisis team has extensive organizational knowledge with clinicians having 30 or more years of experience, which allows one to garner invaluable experience within the mental health system and promotes interacting with individuals across the entire life span having a wide variety of mental illnesses and challenges. All current clinicians have been with the crisis team for at least two or more years. Our clinicians gain valuable clinical skills and knowledge that is unmatched in other positions within the mental health field. The position provides for professional growth and development opportunities within a career ladder. 

Under the direction of the Crisis Clinician Supervisor this position is responsible for assessing the consumers and accessing appropriate clinical services. Primary responsibility is responding to mobile crisis calls from community professionals and persons within Blair county. This includes, but is not limited to, answering questions, completing mental health assessments, obtaining clinical information, helping to coordinate and schedule outpatient evaluations, responding to telephone crisis and walk-in, and documentation of all duties previously mentioned.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist consumer in developing a crisis plan.
  • Provide follow-up services to consumers by phone and/or mobile visits.
  • Provide insight & knowledge of insurance programs, processes and able to obtain authorizations as needed.
  • Support consumer and negotiates appropriate referral services.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and supervisor in case consultations.
  • Work efficiently and independently in crisis setting.
  • Utilize specific techniques of motivational interviewing.
  • Provide crisis services in a community and/or office setting.
  • Provide supportive counseling to consumers to promote stability.
  • Complete consumer/family crisis assessments (face to face and telephone).
  • Manage crisis situations effectively using positive approaches.
  • Meet standards for documentation and completes all required paperwork.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Psychology, Counseling or Social Work with three years clinical experience

OR

  • Masters Degree in Psychology, Counseling or Social Work required. 
  • Other fields of study may be considered with coursework of at least 12 credits in human services and/or relevant mental health experience. 

ATTENTION: IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A DEGREE IN PSYCHOLOGY, COUNSELING OR SOCIAL WORK, YOU MUST UPLOAD YOUR TRANSCRIPTS FOR CONSIDERATION.

  • Work history that includes phone triage, as well as an in-depth knowledge and proven skill at doing psychiatric assessments.
  • Experience in mental health crisis intervention, case management, or in-home therapy preferred.
  • Excellent, recovery-oriented interpersonal relations.
  • Ability to work shifts, weekends, holidays, and to assume on call responsibilities.
  • May in the course of their duties be in rooms where medications are stored or may transport medications when they transport patients.
  • Transportation of medication is limited from one department to another.

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) OR Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC)
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting
  • Act 33
  • Act 34
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
