University of Pittsburgh Physicians is seeking a Lead Certified Nurse Midwife (Full-Scope) to join a successful, employed practice with an attractive compensation package near Pittsburgh.  Assume a well-established practice with a collegial call group.  UPMC Horizon's program has enjoyed steady growth due to the outstanding reputation of its physicians and its partnership with both UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital as well as Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Under the direction of the Division Directors for Midwifery and Community Practices, functions as an administrative supervisor coordinate the activities of the midwives, acts as liaison with other hospital departments to develop and implement the functions of the midwifery practice, in addition to direct care.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Supervises the activities of certified nurse-midwives (CNM's) within the Midwives at Horizon practice.
  • Oversees the orientation of new midwives
  • Conducts regular staff meetings.
  • Is responsible for office and call schedules for the practice.
  • Apprises the Director of Midwifery and the Lead Physician (or her/his designate) in a timely fashion of any significant clinical issues or occurrences that arise from the midwifery practice.
  • Maintains links to nursing and other departments within UPMC-Horizon to assure optimal midwifery care.
  • Works with the Director of the UPMC Division of Midwifery to strategically plan for the growth and development of the Midwives at Horizon practice.
  • Carries out the principle duties and responsibilities of the Clinical Faculty CNM as appropriate to his/her Lead role.

Clinical Faculty Midwife Productivity

  • Midwife shall be available to perform clinical and administrative services, on average, forty-eight (48) hours per week, including performance of clinical services during a full day office schedule, day call, night and weekend call.
  • Midwife will be available for participation in clinical meetings, patient orientation sessions, and administrative needs of the midwifery service.
  • Full compliance with timely and accurate completion of charts and associated clinical documentation.
  • Midwife shall participate in community education, outreach activities, and activities to promote midwifery as mutually agreed upon by UPP and Midwife.
  • Participate in all Annual Training Requirements for Midwives/Faculty as may be established, for both UPP and SOM.
  • Full compliance with the UPP Compliance Plan annual training requirements and all internal and compliance audits (i.e., Departmental and Corporate).
  • Provision of all information, as requested, necessary for divisional and departmental budgeting in a timely manner.
  • OSHA, Patient Safety, Bio-Terrorism Training (and any others as mandated by Corporate during the course of the fiscal year).
  • Maintain current Pennsylvania midwifery license, prescriptive authority certificate and nursing license, Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) certificate, Medicare & other third party payer-provider number(s) as deemed necessary by UPP. Maintain an active ACNM certificate.
  • Completion of the Annual Faculty Performance Evaluation within an established time frame and maintaining a minimum overall rating of Satisfactory.
  • Meet State Boards of Medicine and Nursing CME requirements as well as American Midwifery Certification Board requirements


Basic Qualifications:

  • Graduate of education program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME)
  • AMCB Certification
  • Current state RN and CNM licensure
  • Minimum 5 years clinical midwifery experience required
  • Clinical Leadership/Management experience preferred
