Behavioral Health Program Manager (RN)- UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital

UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital is seeking a dynamic leader to manage the operations of the Nurse Clinicians throughout the hospital at our Oakland location in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The Behavioral Health Program Manager is the captain of our clinical team, fostering operational health for the Nurse Clinicians, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and Commitment Specialists by effectively managing human resource, clinical, and administrative concerns. The Behavioral Health Program Manager will also contribute to the team by executing Nurse Clinician duties including admissions, discharges, and contributing to the treatment team meetings. 


  • Acts as liaison between disciplines, departments, and hospitals for assigned patients
  • Participates in interdisciplinary meetings and other activities Maintains professional communication with multidisciplinary team members
  • Able to interface with various members of multidisciplinary team members to coordinate all aspects of patient care.
  • Coordinates daily care for assigned team
  • Assesses client from holistic perspective.
  • Have knowledge of psychiatric diagnoses and be able to differentiate diagnosis on assigned patients.
  • Rounds daily on team of assigned patients and/or discuss patients with treatment team
  • Coordinates patient follow-up discharge plans and medical plans with Social Work and Primary Medicine respectively. Monitors psychiatric, medical, psychosocial status of assigned team.
  • Actively participates in treatment team meetings.
  • Provides patient/family education around psychiatric medication/diagnosis as needed.
  • Initiates or reviews admission paperwork of all assigned patients.
  • Completes documentation according to established policies and in timely fashion
  • Maintain competency requirements
  • Attend a minimum of 2 unit based in services yearly Attend a minimum of 6 educational meetings offered within Institute or Outside Program
  • Utilize up to date practices/information in delivery of patient care
  • Role Models professional practice and provides mentorship/preceptorship for clinicians.
  • Oversights Nurse Clinicians and Nurse Clinical Specialist for practice compliance
  • Responsible/leads monthly Nurse Clinician/NCS meetings.
  • Coordinates and Develops the Nurse Clinician/NCS education annual series based on Learning needs of group.
  • Maintains/follows meeting minutes and educational binder for clinicians/NCS.
  • Leads key initiatives for assigned staff and represents them in meetings as assigned.
  • Provides education and consultation regarding psychiatric treatment, management, and psychopharmacology for staff
  • Coordinates and facilitates with MD and treatment team direct admissions and ED admissions as assigned
  • Participates in on-going review and development and provision of Group Programming for the unit
  • Leads routine therapeutic patient groups
  • Has good organizational skills that leads to effective time management.
  • Provides all administrative functions for the department including HR processes.
  • Participate as an integral professional member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Assist with coordinating plan of care and discharge/transfer as needed
  • Monitors and tracks commitment status and collaborates with commitment specialists or unit staff.
  • Has a firm understanding of the commitment process and monitors completion of appropriate paperwork and monitoring of the commitments.
  • Work with team and pharmacy to acquire medication prior authorization as needed
  • Review medial H & P, progress notes & summarize medical course
  • Performs psychiatric review of symptoms
  • Completes or reviews medication reconciliation as needed
  • Obtain collateral information from families and team
  • Assess for medication s/e ? ongoing which may include EPS, NMS, Serotonin Syndrome, Lithium toxicity, etc.
  • Complete Drug & Alcohol inventory and assess for any withdrawal signs/symptoms
  • Review labs, EKG, etc. and document any remarkable results
  • Complete physical exam as needed assessing for any abnormal movements, rigidity, cog-wheeling, weakness, gait problems
  • Complete Suicide/Homicide risk assessment
  • Summarize cases and pull together findings in impression including lethality assessment
  • Offer preliminary recommendations especially re: any immediate safety needs and notify appropriate staff
  • Communicate pertinent results to Psychiatrist
  • Check for resolution/worsening of any identified problems-i.e. delirium, as well as med checks for tolerance and efficacy
  • Complete follow-up visits as needed and clinically appropriate
  • Assist with facilitating transfers
  • Attend treatment teams as needed
  • Provide 24-hour phone on-call to provide support



  • A Master's degree in Nursing is required.
  • Minimum of five years relevant behavioral health experience.
  • American Nurses Credentialing Center (PLEASE UPLOAD CERTIFICATE) 
  • Registered Nurse (RN) 
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
