Priest Chaplain-UPMC Mercy

Description

UPMC Mercy is hiring a Priest Chaplain for our Pittsburgh, Pa location!

Schedule: Rotating schedule between days, evening and overnight call when needed
An on-call apartment is provided when working on call shifts which is located across the street!

Purpose:
Provides pastoral care to all patients and their families.

Responsibilities:

  • Understand consensus building and negotiation.
  • Assesses and provides spiritual and emotional support with empathy, compassion and respect for diversity to patients, loved ones, and healthcare staff during the course of regular unit rounding, emergent situations and as needed/requested.

  • Supports ethical decision making as requested with knowledge and appropriate application of Religious and Ethical Directives of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.

  • Documents patient visits/care accurately in the appropriate records according to professional standards including electronic medical record.

  • Shares in departmental coverage and on-call responsibilities as scheduled, needed,  and responds to pages in a timely manner.

  • Maintains confidentiality and performs duties in adherence with HIPPA requirements, and other mandatory departmental/hospital policies, procedures, protocol, competencies, key behaviors and hospital mission/value statement.

  • Participates in/celebrates/leads liturgical services including Mass and other services and administers sacraments as needed/requested.

  • Attends staff, institutional ethics committee, and other pertinent meetings.

  • Communicate well in a professional exchange of ideas with staff.
  • Share on-call responsibilities.
  • Provide pastoral care in routine and emergent situations.
  • Lead worship as scheduled.
  • Attend staff meetings and paraticipate in setting goals.
  • Complete required documentation.
  • Offer expertise in leading groups and continuing education.
  • Working in/contributing to life of interfaith team.
  • Knowledge and understanding of department standards and policiees.
  • Seek opportunities for continuing education.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings as required.
  • Commitment to patient/family/staff centered pastoral care.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required.

 

Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Theology, Divinity or related counseling field.
  • Understanding of health care ministry.
  • Knowledge of religious values and traditions.
  • Minimum 4 units Clinical Pastoral Education preferrred.
  • Spiritual maturty and emotional stability.
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to provide pastoral care to patients served.Must know the principles of growth and development to age-specific needs.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural setting.Sensitivity to multi-cultural/religious diversity.
  • Ability to adapt to on-going change.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Professional certification or eligibility as Chaplain from a national certifying organization required, (e.g., The College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy, the Association of Professional Chaplains, the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, the National Association of Jewish Chaplains).
  • Ordination or Commission to function in a ministry of pastoral care and endorsement by his/her denomination authority required.
