UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh is hiring an Industrial Engineering Co-op to assist with Hospital Operations Process Improvement initiatives.  This is a Monday through Friday daylight position.  The day to day tasks will vary as they will primarily be project based. This is a great opportunity for an industrial engineering student to learn how to apply Lean and Six Sigma to a healthcare setting, but also to see how to grow and form a culture of process improvement.



  • Data Collection

    • Observations: Time studies, work sampling, etc

    • Run Built Reports: Datawarehouse, EPIC

  • Data Analysis

    • Descriptive statistics

    • Control Charts

    • Format and send finalized reports

  • Conduct Mini Projects

    • 5S, Kanban, etc

    • Cost analysis and reduction

    • Process evaluation and improvement

    • Value stream mapping activities

  • Support Specialists on projects

    • Attend meetings

    • Construct visual diagrams: process maps, 5 whys, etc

  • Assist with Project Management Documentation

    • Project charters, closures, ghantt charts, etc.

  • Learning and Development




  • Basic experience with data analysis, methods and graphing
  • Creative problem solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office Tools, with a special emphasis on Excel

Education and experience required:

  • Should be actively pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, or other relevant Engineering discipline, from an ABET-accredited program, with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and have completed at least one semester of Sophomore year before beginning this co-op.


  • Must have a form of transportation to travel to satellite locations (30 miles) as needed (~5% of the time)

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:


  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
