UPMC Shadyside Family Health Center has been teaching doctors to become specialists in family care. Our office serves as the outpatient training site for the Shadyside Family Medicine Residency. We care for patients of all ages, from newborn to geriatric, and provide unique services such as obstetric care, medication assisted therapy, and behavioral health. Our providers, clinical and clerical staff work together to provide high quality care to our patients and find new ways of delivering that care through research and project work.


The Nurse Manager will partner with the Shadyside Family Medicine Residency Program Director and the Shadyside Family Health Center Medical Director to monitor and improve clinical operations. There role includes overseeing the Family Health Center staff, both clinical and clerical, and engaging with the Residency leadership to facilitate teaching and resident learning opportunities.


  • Determine and flex staffing standards based on patient care needs, patient flow, medical acuity, procedures, staff skills and other clinical needs.Assumes accountability for day-to-day operations of the practice while continuing to function clinically when necessary.Serves as the departmental role model in all aspects of patient and community care.Incorporates national professional organization as well as business unit and health system's goals to improve patient safety, quality and satisfaction.Creates a caring and compassionate patient focused experience by building healing relationships with patients, families and colleagues.
  • The Nurse Manager is administratively accountable for the management of all activity within the practice.Demonstrates the ability to create a shared vision that applies to critical thinking skills and utilizes financial and quality data and conceptual knowledge in the development of the department vision and operational plan. Orchestrates complex change and acknowledges the psychological transition on self and others. Involves stakeholders and experts in planning, designing and redesigning change.Uses appropriate interpersonal styles and techniques to gain acceptance of ideas or plans; modifying one's own behavior to accommodate tasks, situations, and individuals involved. Supports staff during times of difficult transitions.

  • Evaluates clinical space utilization and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Assures that staff members follow appropriate safety procedures related to patient care.
  • Assists administration in developing goals and objectives for clinical and support staff and completes yearly performance evaluations.
  • Reviews abnormal laboratory values and consults with physicians as needed.
  • Supervises and coordinates the activities of the support and clinical staff in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Provides referrals for home care and specialty clinics under physician direction.
  • Schedules appointments as needed.
  • Participates in the formulation and revision of clinic policies and procedures.
  • Utilizes EpicCare (eHealth Record) to document all patient interactions, including medication refills and telephone calls.
  • Monitors and maintains compliance with the requirements of outside regulatory agencies and health insurers.
  • Assists clinicians with physical exams.
  • Provides health education material to patients and/or families and maintains the files in an accessible location.
  • Identifies emergency situations, initiates appropriate nursing interventions and seeks assistance from other health team members.
  • Leads or participates in quality improvement activities. Evaluates the quality of care and assists in the implementation of action plans to advance the quality of care delivered.
  • Assists patients in obtaining new and renewal medications by contacting the pharmacy under physician direction.
  • Performs treatments and procedures such as catheterizations, ear irrigations, injections and assisting with special procedures such as lumbar puncture, pelvic exam, etc.
  • Schedules employees to provide adequate coverage of the clinic during operational hours.
  • Obtains authorizations from insurance companies for test/procedures/surgeries under physician direction.



  • Minimum 5 years Nursing Experience required.
  • Progressive leadership experience with relevant clinical experience preferred.
  • BSN or Bachelors in related health care field required.
  • MSN or Masters in a health care field preferred.
  • Previous Graduate Medical Education experience preferred 
  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below. They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patients status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patients requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse. CPR CertificationCPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
