Lead ECT Technician

Description

UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital is currently seeking a flex full-time (28 hours +)  Lead ETC Technician to help support the Center of Interventional Psychiatry. The Lead ECT Technician’s focus will be on the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatment but will also support the ECT treatment team within the department.

The Lead ETC Technician will work independently as they will be responsible for scheduling procedures, taking vitals, assisting with dressings, applying EKG leads, transporting patients, mapping procedures with physicians, and assisting with the billing process.

Responsibilities:

  • Role models care for other techs.
  • Monitors and gives feedback/direction to junior ECT techs.
  • Provides physical care and technical care procedures as applications of EKG leads, taking vital signs, monitoring level of consciousness and assisting with toileting and changing clothes.
  • Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment.
  • Assists in the implementation and maintenance of the department program providing a consistent and therapeutic approach to patient care.
  • Manages crisis situations effectively using positive approaches
  • Assists the nurse and other direct care staff in the provision of physical care.
  • Documents in the medical record according to established policies.
  • Maintains competency requirements.
  • Attends a minimum of 2 unit based or institute-wide inservices yearly.
  • Learns and utilizes up-to-date technology and practices in the delivery of patient care
  • Collaborates with leadership team about processes in suite.
  • Maintains on-going communication with the observations of patients; medical and behavioral symptoms and the care provided.
  • Works under the supervision of a registered nurse in providing care to patients as assigned by the Nurse Clinical Manager or designee.
  • Performs clinical research functions as assigned by the Nurse Clinical Manager or designee.
  • Takes initiative to ensure that department environment is maintained.
  • Functions as a Preceptor for new ECT Tech.
  • Provides feedback regarding other ECT Techs' performance to Nurse Clinical Manager.

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 3 years psychiatric experience
  • Current or past psychiatric direct care experience, preferably with Geriatric, Adult and Adolescent populations.
  • Experience with TMS preferred. 
  • Ability to communicate adequately in English both verbally and written.
  • Physically capable of providing direct total physical care to unpredictable, potentially violent mentally ill patients as necessary, including lifting, supporting, running towards or away from areas where problems are occurring and pushing and pulling equipment such as wheel chairs, stretchers and beds.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CCM training is required within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter
 

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC)
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
