Infection Prevention Program Manager

Description

UPMC McKeesport is hiring a Full-TIme Infection Prevention Program Manager to support our Business Unit!

Purpose:

  • Coordinate Infection Prevention and Control activities which include the detection and prevention of infections occurring in the healthcare setting through investigation, consultation, and education of hospital departments and reporting/liaison to State/Local Health Department.
  • Oversee and perform annual Performance Reviews for the Infection Control Preventionists (ICP) and office support staff.


Responsibilities:

  • Sets high standards of performance for self and others by imposing standards of excellence and development of inquiry skills that are innovative, optimistic, and supportive of professional growth.
  • Creates developmental paths and plans for staff to increase the expertise and caliber of staff. Initiates innovation in staff development, clinical orientation, continuing education, and supports specialty certification.
  • Develop, initiate and participate in educational programs for hospital personnel to maintain or enhance their knowledge of infection control. Serve on the Hospital Infection Committee and represent Hospital Epidemiology on various committees that require infection control input.
  • Attend and participate in meetings for purpose of self-education and communicating new ideas to the Hospital Epidemiology Program
  • Collaborate with hospital personnel concerning patients and/or problem areas needing infection control expertise.
  • Assist the Hospital Epidemiologist with any special duties or reports assigned during an investigation of outbreaks or other special situations.
  • Assist ICP's in reviewing surveillance data for assigned hospital wards to detect any areas with increased rates or clusters of hospital-associated infections, which should be reported to the Hospital Epidemiologist. Investigate such areas for possible sources of infection, educate healthcare personnel regarding short and long-term control measures and assist in the evaluation of the effectiveness of such controls.
  • Analyze, interpret and disseminate infection control data to maximize the effectiveness of the infection control program.
  • Act as liaison with Employee Health, local and state health departments, and other healthcare facilities by reporting and investigating communicable diseases.
  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by building teams and relationships through mentoring and modeling uplifting and positive communication.
  • Extends trust by acknowledging the contributions of others; listens first, creates transparency in communications, confronts reality, and clarifies expectations.
  • Conveys information and ideas clearly through a variety of media to individuals or groups in a manner that engages the audience and helps them understand and retain the message.
  • Perform related duties as required
  • Collaborates with medical staff to monitor patient outcomes; set clinical quality priorities, recommend and implement professional improvements and initiatives and implement unit based patient safety initiatives.
  • Monitors dashboard indicators and quality in unit/department to meet organizational goals and develops action plans to address specific concerns and improve quality. Utilizes research and evidence-based practice to support improvement in clinical care.
  • Shares learning from improvements with other departments and/or spreads across the business unit or system. Identifies appropriate risk assessment strategies and provides timely follow-up regarding risk-related issues or patient or family concerns including the development of root cause analysis as appropriate.
  • Supports and encourages the involvement of staff nurses in the development and implementation of evidence-based practice and quality improvement initiatives related to infection prevention and control.
  • Develop infection control policies/guidelines for all hospital departments that reflect current standards of practice and compliance with CDC, OSHA, TJC, and the Department of Health guidelines.
  • Demonstrates the ability to create a shared vision, applies critical thinking skills and utilizes financial and quality data and conceptual knowledge in the development of the department vision and operational plan.
  • Involves staff and key stakeholders in the development of a vision for the unit/ department within a shared governance model of practice. Orchestrates complex change and acknowledges the psychological transition on self and others.
  • Involves stakeholders and experts in planning, designing, and redesigning change.
  • Uses appropriate interpersonal styles and techniques to gain acceptance of ideas or plans; modifying one's own behavior to accommodate tasks, situations and individuals involved.
  • Supports staff during times of difficult transitions
  • Establishes a culture of caring by promoting decisions that are patient-centered and within the framework of Relationship Based Care, using the nursing process that meets the clinical, psychological and spiritual needs of the patient, family and staff Ensures that nurses practice in accordance with established Clinical Standards of Performance as defined by organization, system, professional and regulatory organizations.
  • Applies national best practices and uses evidence-based practice to build a culture of excellence in patient care; Promotes interdisciplinary partnership and consultation of hospital staff and health care team through participation in committees and related activities to ensure appropriate care and services for patients and families. Sets clinical, financial, and human resources priorities for improvement in concert with organizational goals.
  • Demonstrates sound fiscal responsibility in the development and management of the department budget and holds staff accountable for the efficient use of resources.
  • Demonstrates ability to influence the external environment through participation in professional and advocacy organizations.
  • Coordinate surveillance of hospital areas to generate hospital-associated infection statistics through review of patient records, microbiological, radiological, and other laboratory data, and patient treatment plans.
  • Communicate with hospital personnel and coordinate prevention of nosocomial infection by supervision and monitoring of appropriate isolation.
  • Track antimicrobial resistance requiring isolation among inpatients and outpatients using computerized databases

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Microbiology, Medical Technology or related field required.
  • Master's degree in Nursing, Microbiology, Medical Technology or related field preferred.
  • Three years of infection control experience required.
  • Basic computer skills required and data management/analysis experience preferred
  • Reports to facility designated administrator/operational leader.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Current Certified in Infection Control (CIC) certification required. Registered Nurses are required to maintain current RN licensure.
