Supv Research Lab


This position is in the laboratory of David A. Lewis, MD, which is part of the Translational Neuroscience Program in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital. The lab’s research focuses on the neural circuitry of the prefrontal cortex and related brain regions and the alterations of this circuitry in schizophrenia. In addition, the lab is one of the NIH NeuroBioBank (NBB) Brain and Tissue Repositories (BTRs). This person will be responsible for managing the laboratory division within laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, and guidelines and according to applicable authority levels, laws and regulations. 
There will be travel between the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office in the Strip District and the BST in Oakland. Travel between these two buildings depends on weekly schedules but is typically 2-3 days per week.

This position is grant funded. 


  • Collect data, analyze and prepare reports of Brain Bank and ACOME activity. Rigorously train new team members who serve as liaison team members. 
  • Maintain professional relationships with ACOME staff.
  • Brain tissue processing, retrieval, distribution and documentation. 
  • Coordinate freezer space allocation and organization.
  • Perform subject records entry in database and perform searches.
  • Participate in NBB leadership team.
  • Participates in planning and setting goals for the maintenance and development of activities and resources appropriate for the requirements of the laboratory.
  • Ensures that the laboratory meets applicable department, hospital and regulatory safety and fire requirements.
  • Functions in a staff role, including performance of tests at workstations, as workflow and workload require.
  • Implements, maintains, documents and assists in the development of an effective quality assurance/quality control program; meets reporting schedules and standards.
  • Participates in the preparation of papers for publication and presentation at meetings. Works with principal investigator to solve study protocol problems.
  • Develops and maintains an organizational plan for the laboratory.
  • Ensures the operational efficiency and accuracy of laboratory equipment; arranges for the repair of equipment.
  • Responsible for following the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event.
  • Writes, updates and maintains the laboratory policy and procedure manual according to department standards.
  • Designs, conducts and/or arranges for on-the-job training and in-service education and information programs for various lab personnel.
  • Responsible for the selection and supervision of assigned staff.
  • Organizes and interprets data and reports the results to principal investigator.


  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or Basic Science.
  • Post-graduate technical experience in a research environment.
  • Previous experience as an assistant and/or laboratory supervisor in a research environment.
  • Successful demonstration of the completion of the competencies required by the department/unit.
  • Proficient management and analytical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle, process and evaluate specimens for testing.
