Oncology Clinical Pharmacist - UPMC Shadyside

Description

The UPMC Shadyside Pharmacy is looking for a Full-Time Inpatient Oncology Clinical Pharmacist to join their team. The Oncology Clinical Pharmacist in this position will be scheduled to work Monday – Friday. Hours can fluctuate based on workload and department needs. The goal of each Oncology Clinical Pharmacist is to provide optimal pharmaceutical care by acting as a consultant to both the inpatient healthcare team and the patient/caregiver. Purpose: Assist the Director as assigned in all aspects of Pharmacy Services within UPMC Facilities. This would include clinical services to the UPMC Facilities' staff as well as administrative activities that pertain to oncology drug delivery. The clinical pharmacist has extensive clinical experience within oncology as well as a working knowledge of aspects of evidence-based medicine, pathway/guideline development, oncology policy development, oncology reimbursement and coverage, clinical research, and drug development. The dispensing of medications is not within the scope of this position.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for providing pharmaceutical care for the UPMC Facilities via direct communication, email, or page.
  • Assist with managing narrow therapeutic and highly toxic drugs in individuals based on comorbidities, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, altered metabolism and elimination, based on renal and/or hepatic function, by directing, monitoring and maintaining therapeutic drug serum concentrations to prevent excessive and unwanted toxicity and outcomes.
  • Provide disease state and drug therapy education for UPMC Facilites' physicians and staff. This may include; written reviews, maintenance of pharmacy intranet information, teaching didactic lectures, conducting continuing education lectures, and facilitating small group topic discussions.
  • Direct and manage supportive care management of patients (anti-emetics, pain control, growth factors, anti-microbial prophylaxis, prevention of tumor lysis syndrome, etc).
  • Advise in the administration of dangerous and toxic bioimmunotherapies and biochemotherapies.
  • Communicate with UPMC Facilities clinical pharmacists to ensure an effective continuum of care for the patients.
  • Assist with the decision making process in the selection of appropriate evidence-based prophylaxis, chemotherapeutic, and supportive care regimens based on the extent of disease, patient performance status and desired outcome for the treatment of a variety of malignant and nonmalignant conditions including patient specific and system-wide treatment plans. Oversee the writing of chemotherapy orders on the out patient bone marrow transplant service and other services as requested.
  • Plan for and direct the treatment of chemotherapy spills, extravasation of vesicants and irritants, and management of hypersensitivity/anaphylactic reactions.
  • Facilitate compliance with Cancer Centers' directives by evaluating and overseeing the appropriate use of high-cost and highly toxic therapies in order to assure suitable control of drug budgets and reimbursement. This includes knowledge of national and local health policy directives.
  • Teach and precept PGY2 oncology pharmacy residents and PGY1 residents completing elective oncology learning experiences

 

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D.) is required.
  • PGY2 and/or fellowship training or equivalent clinical experience are required.
  • Hematology/oncology/stem cell transplant experience is strongly preferred. 
  • Extensive knowledge of clinical research, drug development, and research regulations within institutions is preferred. 

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • A Pharmacist License is required. 
  • Act 34 is required.
  • BCOP Certification is preferred.
