CT Technologist Trainee


Are you a registered imaging technologist looking to take the next step towards a career in CT?  UPMC Presbyterian has an exciting new opportunity to help you reach your goals as a CT Tech Trainee!  This position will allow you to work as a full-time training Technologist while completing your CT training program.  The CT Tech Trainee will be working a variety of hours, but primarily daylight and evening.

UPMC is offering a sign-on bonus to reimburse the cost of your CT program tuition - up to $6,000!

CT Technologist Trainee hourly rate: $20.51

Perform requested studies and manipulate data requiring the use of CT. The trainee will be trained on proper protocol while shadowing and completing CT training to demonstrate ability to fulfill all functions carried out below. The Trainee will be supervised by an RT (CT) registered CT Technologist.


  • Under the supervision of Proctor/CT instructor/CT Tech, properly documents appropriate histories and completes all necessary paperwork.
  • Under the supervision of Proctor/CT instructor/CT Tech, trainee will shadow until deemed capable to perform daily CT scans, using proper protocols, procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Educates patients on all aspects of the CT procedure.
  • At the completion of training should be able to properly screen all patients for any contraindication prior to performing CT scan.
  • Monitors and maintains current department inventory.
  • Performs clerical responsibilities as needed.
  • Exhibits a positive and professional image with patients, physicians, co-workers and peers.
  • Maintains inter- and intra- departmental communications.
  • After successful completion of training program the trainee should be able to demonstrate administering contrast for specific examinations.
  • After successful completion of training program the trainee should be able to demonstrate processes and evaluates QC on processor and CT scanner daily as assigned.
  • After successful completion of training program, the trainee should be able to demonstrate competence to perform required scans on patients of all ages.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement projects.
  • Complies with Imaging and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Performs on-call duties as assigned.
  • All candidates for the CT Tech Trainee program must meet and agree to the criteria below:
    • Candidates must be ARRT or NMTCB (Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board registered
    • Candidates must be willing to work rotating shifts as needed for patient care
    • The maximum timeframe for completion of the CT program will be 6 months with one extension available at 3 months
    • Trainees will be required to sit for the ARRT CT exam no later than 3 months after completion of the training program
    • When the candidate has successfully passed the Registry exam, he/she will move to the CT Technologist salary range, if the candidate fails to pass the exam and/or course the candidate will be terminated from the CT department.
    • The candidate must remain in the CT department for two (2) years after ARRT CT certification and registration.
    • Failure to meet this requirement may result in the need to reimburse UPMC for expenses paid by UPMC for trainee's participation in the Program and/or becoming ineligible for hire as a CT Tech.



  • Graduate of approved School of Radiography
  • Must be currently enrolled in an Advanced Imaging Tech Training program

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Maintains current CPR certification
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or successful completion of BLS training and certification upon hire
  • ARRT Certificate
