Description

Purpose:
The Referral Coordinator answers requests from consumers, businesses, and medical professionals. Coordinates and/or facilitates referrals to the correct UPMC service providers or departments.

Responsibilities:

  • Must be knowledgeable in all areas of insurance verification and authorization/referral processes. 
  • Daily reviews and monitors referral work que in order to provide accurate and timely referral process documentation. Serves as the first-line resource for all customers (internal/external) with regards to Insurance and Referrals.
  • Maintain standards of excellence verbally and in written form with customers both internally and externally.
  • Communicate potential areas of concern to the servicing provider and follow up as necessary.
  • Give high priority to patient/customer satisfaction. Act as an advocate for the patient/customer.
  • Answer incoming telephone inquiries: based on the type of call, problem solve, transfer or coordinate referral as appropriate and on a timely basis.
  • Interface with the referral source, patient/family, insurance companies, and provider to assure timely delivery.

 

Qualifications

  • High School diploma required.  Some college preferred. Additional training as a medical secretary, licensed/certified practical nurse, paramedic or emergency medical technician is preferred.
  • 5 years experience working with the public in a health care setting, with a strong service orientation.
  • Sound working knowledge of medical terminology and ability to discern clinical and non-clinical service needs. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and computer literacy/data entry skills are required.
  • High level of independence required in problem-solving activities. Strong organizational skills that will generate efficiency & effectiveness. Adaptable to change. Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment & function independently and be ability to prioritize actual referrals. Ability to analyze issues objectively & provide workable solutions & implement those actions.Team player, flexible, and adaptable to change.
  • Ability to type at least 35 words per minute.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Clearances must be dated within 90 days
 

  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
