Casual Pulmonary Technologist I


UPMC Presbyterian/ Falk Clinic is seeking a Pulmonary Function Technologist Level I who is interested in working in a fast-paced environment with patients that suffer from advanced lung disease. We are looking for an Exercise Physiologist or a Respiratory Therapist to fill this position.  The Pulmonary Function Technologist  I role requires critical thinking and a lot of teamwork interacting with physicians, nurses, and medical assistants will be part of the daily routine. There are several opportunities for advancement. We have a clinical ladder that will allow you to progress;  you may also be interested in a charge role and if selected you will be compensated for taking on additional responsibilities during your shift. Opportunities also exist to provide cross-coverage in our Pulmonary Rehabilitation setting. This position is at a casual status. 

The final title and pay will be determined by education, experience, certifications and career ladder requirements. 


  • Adheres to department policies, performance and reporting of procedures, billing and overtime.

  • Assists in pulmonary rehab as requested and assists in providing emergency medical care if needed.

  • Maintains Pulmonary Function equipment, to include calibration, & simple repairs.

  • Performs a complete range of pulmonary diagnostic tests including spirometery, lung volumes and diffusion capacity.

  • Administers respiratory care medications as they relate to performance of pulmonary function testing as delineated in policies /protocols.

  • Performs comprehensive bronchoprovocation challenge testing procedures.

  • Performs duties and responsibilities according to the corporate philosophy and basis of service excellence of the UPMC Health System.

  • Performs exercise desaturation; six-minute walk studies and home oxygen evaluation procedures, including arterial blood gas punctures and hemoglobin samples.



  • High school graduate or two years of college with a science and math background or degree in a related field.
  • Previous experience in healthcare setting a plus.
  • Must be able to interact with unstable patients..
  • BLS certification required.
  • Must be able to interact with unstable patients and operate complex medical electronic equipment.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  •  Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 34
