The primary role of the Software Engineer, Senior (DevOps) is to create, maintain, and optimize the DevOps Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery tools, configurations, and infrastructure for the UPMC Consumer Technology department. This individual will contribute to the strategic planning and implementation of automated CI/CD processes for the development, testing, and release of supported software, and collaborate with software engineers, systems analysts, and quality assurance to optimize established processes and procedures throughout the software development lifecycle.
The role will require a broad background in computer science, the application of different programming languages, a complete set of programming/debugging skills, the ability to adapt and change, and an aptitude for continuous learning.

  • Integration - Responsible for more complex integration between modules.
  • Troubleshooting - Solve multiple issues concurrently. Coordinate, delegate, and mentor less experienced staff with issue resolution.
  • Security - Validate and review secure processes and protocols. Ensure that processes/protocols are followed by junior level staff.
  • Software Solutions - Develop, validate and implement software solutions based on customer requirements, Enterprise architecture standards and defined project designs.
  • Quality - Demonstrate the ability to conduct code review of others.
  • Application Development Cycle - Demonstrate the understanding of multiple SDLCs.
Additional Responsibilities: 
  • In support of department and leadership vision and roadmaps, review and recommend Continuous Integration/Continuous delivery (CI/CD) strategies and technical solutions for multiple diverse web-based and mobile applications, microservices, and legacy software systems
  • Create, maintain, and optimize the DevOps CI/CD tools, configuration, and infrastructure
  • Define, apply, monitor, and enforce standard procedures and best practices for DevOps CI/CD
  • Identify opportunities to apply automation and implement tools and utilities that enhance software development, build and deploy, QA, and release processes
  • Research build and deploy failures; assist with root cause analysis and problem remediation
  • Document and educate others on the build and release processes
  • Coordinates and delegates tasks to team members towards a common goal
  • Mentors, motivates and inspires team members
  • Assists management with staffing needs and provides feedback for staff evaluations
  • Maintains skillset and awareness of DevOps industry standards


  • Typically has 5+ years’ experience in a DevOps/build management role, with proven success defining and implementing new processes, driving transformational change, and monitoring for adherence.
  • Experience with complex development environments, taking abstract concepts or ideas and working collaboratively to develop automated deployment solutions throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Team player with the ability to work collaboratively as well as individually
  • Mastery of software development principles and coding standards/best practices.
  • Exhibits a fundamental understanding of modern Azure Services offerings including Azure storage, Service Bus, Azure SQL Database, Redis Cache, Azure Search, Azure Monitor, Application Insights, Traffic Manager, Key Vault, Cosmos DB, Logic Apps and Azure Functions.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the Agile/SCRUM software development lifecycle methodology.
  • Experience with container orchestration services such as Azure Kubernetes (AKS) and Docker is preferred.
  • Experience integrating automated testing into CI/CD processes.
  • Experience with scripting solutions such as PowerShell or JavaScript.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure cloud architecture and services including API Management, Application Gateway, Azure Active Directory, and Azure Resource Manager (ARM Templates)
  • Expert level experience administering DevOps Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery tools and source control management including Azure Pipelines, YAML, or equivalent technologies such as GitLab, Jenkins, or AWS CodeDeploy.
