UPMC is looking to hire a Senior Wireless Engineer to support the Enterprise Communication Group. The mission of the UPMC WLAN team is to provide uninterrupted service of an advanced wireless network to the clients that are served in all facilities. The goal is to design non-wireline systems that provide service for critical devices used in clinical environments along with a guest network for our patients and their families. The WLAN team provides continuous coverage for voice, data, and video applications that require low latency for real-time delivery. The latest technology and adopted standards of the IEEE are implemented to optimize throughput, connectivity, and user experience

Under the direction of the management team and senior staff, the Senior Wireless Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and support of the wireless systems. The Wireless Engineer reviews, organizes, communicates, and records requests for wireless network additions, deletions, and/or changes within UPMC and/or affiliated businesses while providing technical assistance to departmental personnel, clients, vendors and other parties. Additional responsibilities and accountabilities include basic configuration of network security hardware and software, enforce security policies, and perform network compliance activities. 

  • Review all assigned UPMC network client specialized service requests, received through request notification systems (i.e Cherwell system, pages, electronic mail, etc.) responds to client requests, within service level, providing information as to service(s) and lead-time to meet objective. Coordinate with client in service delivery activities and all requirements to meet the request, keeping the client current on the status of the service request (i.e. phone call, email, etc.).
  • Provide ISD Level II support services for problem calls escalated by the ISD Help Desk and coordinate with UPMC personnel and vendors to resolve issues. Report back to ISD Help Desk and user on problem status until resolved.
  • Manages HP Aruba and Cisco, wireless with both centralized and remote management. Responsible for small projects, as assigned. Coordinate and direct activities related to project goals and completion. Provide project reports, as required and document project status and related information.
  • Uses packet analyzers and other network sniffer tools to troubleshoot and isolate issues.
  • Coordinate and support the installation of data communications network hardware including, but not limited to Access Points, Wireless Controllers, routers, switches, servers, personal computers, etc. as outlined and documented in the assigned project(s) and/or initiative(s).
  • Understand and explain network topologies, network hardware, and protocols.
  • Control project costs and communicate any project-related expenses to project manager.
  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of wireless network security hardware and software.
  • Provide service to ISD client community, patients, families and visitors, while protecting the integrity and confidentiality of all data and information through physical and electronic measures while complying with UPMC, ISD, and ISD Technical Services Department Policies and Procedures
  • Assist with wireless network trouble-shooting and sizing
  • Apprise project manager of status, schedule variances, and outstanding issues.
  • Display ability to troubleshoot and correct wireless network problems remotely and on-site.
  • Keeps abreast of trends and changing technologies in IT, wired and wireless Data Communications, Information Security, and Network Security.
  • Plan, publish, maintain, and distribute technical documentation pertaining to UPMC Data Communications network including pictures, procedures, practices, and problem determination guidelines as requested or assigned by the Manager, Wireless Communications, and/or the Director, ISD Network Services.
  • Maintain electronic documentation, as defined by the Manager, Wireless communications, for all UPMC facilities, as approved by the Manager, Wireless Communications, and/or the Director, ISD Network Services.
  • Provide support as required by ISD's Disaster Recovery Plan.
  • Provide on-call support (non-business hours) as established and in accordance with ISD Technical Services Department Policies and Procedures, Service Level Agreements, and any other documentation or directives, as determined by the Manager, Wireless Communications, and/or the Director, ISD Network Services.



  • Typically has 5+ years of wireless communications infrastructure design and support experience.
  • Knowledge base for an IT professional.
  • Solid understanding of core IT knowledge in Data Communications
  • Understand both wired and wireless connectivity.
  • Must be highly motivated to apply process improvement (CMMI) to increase product and service quality to achieve business objectives.
  • Ability to manage wireless networks.
  • Knowledge of IT principles and analytical rules that will aid in practical situations.
  • Complete ongoing training on-the-job, through courses, self-study, certifications and/or advanced degrees to maintain and enhance technical and business capabilities.
