ANCC Magnet designated UPMC Passavant is currently hiring Full-Time Advanced Patient Care Technicians to support our Progressive Care and Intensive Care Units at the McCandless location.

This position is eligible for a $500 Sign-On Bonus with a 1-year commitment!

Our Full-Time APCTs typically work three 12-hour rotating shifts to cover daylight, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts. A competitive candidate will have 6 months of prior patient care experience.


Advanced Patient Care Technicians are essential partners in our mission, enhancing the patient experience at UPMC with positivity and integrity. Nursing support staff give personal care to patients with an emphasis on dignity and respect, striving to make each patient feel as comfortable as possible during their hospital stay. Advanced Patient Care Technicians also provide invaluable aid to nurses and doctors on the unit by completing important skilled tasks. The work of an Advanced Patient Care Technician is both challenging and rewarding, many find this to be a wonderful lifelong career.

*Hired candidates may be required to attend a 5-day (experienced) or 7-day (inexperienced) training course. This course is held during weekdays and daylight hours. All 5-7 days are mandatory and are scheduled in a structured classroom setting. Modified Student Nurse Orientation is offered 3 times per year.

Advanced Patient Care Technicians are always encouraged to seek growth and advancement within UPMC. Title and salary will be determined based on education and prior experience.


About the Progressive Care (Step-Down) Units:

At UPMC Passavant we have a Medical PCU and a Surgical PCU. Both units have 24-30 private beds each. The patient population on both units consists of individuals requiring a higher level of care than can be provided on the Medical/Surgical Units, but do not require an ICU level of care. Typical patients seen on both units are: post heart catheter, post defibrillator/pacemaker insertion, CHF, anyone with a cardiac arrhythmia requiring medicine to control their heart rate, stroke, high oxygen requirements and those on IV insulin drips.


About the Intensive Care Units:

At UPMC Passavant, we have a MICU/SICU and a CVICU. Both units have 16-beds each. The MICU/SICU specializes in respiratory failure, sepsis, stroke, and renal failure. The patient population on this unit also consists of GI and Neurosurgery cases. The CVICU specializes in cardiac and thoracic surgery. The patient population on this unit also consists of vascular surgery and medical cardiology patients. Staff on both units will be cross-trained as Unit Secretaries and will work closely with Physicians, Pharmacists, PT/OT, Care Management, and Social Work.



  • Provides routine patient care and supports the department services in accordance with established policies and procedures, and as may be directed by the nurse or physician to assure that the highest degree of quality patient care can be maintained at all times.
  • Completes advanced patient care duties after successfully completing training and annual competencies.
  • Must routinely perform the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections and Foley care) AND at least 4 of the following hospital identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal.

  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the health care team.
  • Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence and impairment in the health professions.
  • Cares for patients and self by supporting safety in the workplace.
  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by demonstrating accountability for actions, enthusiasm, motivation and commitment to patients and colleagues.
  • Assures equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department.
  • Establishes appropriate and effective communication with other departments.
  • Establishes professional and respectful interpersonal relationships.
  • Contributes to the universal unit activities including, but not limited to, responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays and transporting patients.
  • Performs the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections and Foley care) AND at least four of the following BU identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal.
  • Provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living.
  • Assists with physical, respiratory and cardiopulmonary therapies.
  • Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.
  • Provides instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN.
  • May apply, monitor and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.
  • Strictly adheres to all policies and procedures relative to patient care and hospital related information.
  • Complies with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions.
  • Documents in the medical record according to established procedures.
  • Performs assigned work in a timely and productive manner.
  • Completes department clerical functions as needed.
  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 6 months patient care experience preferred.
  • If no previous hospital or pre-hospital training, successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class OR successful completion of EIC training program OR successful completion of first year of clinical work in a nursing program.
  • Successful completion of basic information system training.  Microcomputer experience preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.


Licensure, Certification, and Clearances:

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
