Are you an experienced benefits professional looking for the next challenge in your career?  UPMC is hiring a Director, Employee Benefits for our UPMC Corporate Benefits Team.  This is a regular, full-time position that primarily works daylight hours, Monday through Friday, in a hybrid work setup.

The Director of Employee Benefits is responsible for the development, administration, and effective communication of UPMC physician and staff benefit programs including health and welfare benefits, retirement benefits, and voluntary benefit programs. They will help ensure that programs are market competitive and add value for employees and the organization through fostering strong relationships with business unit and health system leaders, HR teams, carriers, TPAs, brokers, local colleges and Employee Benefits staff with focus on the delivery of superior programs and initiatives that support talent attraction and retention. The Director, Employee Benefits partners with UPMC Health Plan on key initiatives affecting health system. They ensure compliance with all government filings and regulations (HIPAA, COBRA, ERISA, 5500s, etc.).

  • Participate as leader or member of various committees and project teams, including, but not limited to, UPMC Health Plan employer/client/internal committees, wellness committee, total compensation, HRIS software changes, policy, plan design and administration changes.
  • Demonstrate strong people-leader and team building experience.  Confidently manage hiring, training, and career development of team direct reports.
  • Provide consultative services to business unit Human Resources staff concerning benefits, tuition assistance, and leave programs as needed.
  • Ensure timely and accurate filing of required government forms. Participate as member of the ERISA appeals committee, accountable for reviewing and responding to ERISA claims and appeals.
  • Manage client/vendor relationship with all carriers and TPAs.
  • Evaluate opportunities to improve quality, efficiency and cost in administration and service of benefits plans.
  • Partner with Payroll and Compensation teams on any issues related to benefits that require research and resolution
  • Work with the HRIS team to oversee benefit changes, updates, and implementations and system testing to ensure alignment with plan documents. Understand electronic vendor file interfaces.
  • Help drives UPMC's decisions in the evaluation, design, and implementation of innovative, cost efficient benefits programs on an ongoing basis
  • Ensure timely and accurate distribution of benefit enrollment information to newly hired staff and those who experience qualified status changes and plan and execute the annual benefits open enrollment process.
  • Manage a team of 20 benefits managers and professionals
  • Execute the communication, administration and service of UPMC's staff, physician and executive benefits plans, including retirement, medical, dental, life, disability, Flexible Spending Accounts, voluntary benefits, tuition assistance, and COBRA continuation coverage through centralized employee service center.



  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field is required.
  • Master's Degree in related field highly preferred.
  • Ten years of proven experience in benefits administration including health and welfare, retirement (defined benefit and defined contribution), and voluntary benefits, with five or more years in a managerial role with three or more direct reports.
  • Benefits experience in a large organization (10,000+) is strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of current Benefits market best practices and experience initiating change. 
  • Thorough working knowledge of all federal, state, and local regulations and compliance requirements related to employee benefits.
  • Experience managing an Employee Service Center preferred, including SLAs, performance analytics preferred w/strong commitment to customer service.
  • Cloud-based HRIS system experience a plus.
  • M&A experience pertaining to Benefits offerings a plus.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritizes tasks to meet time commitments while maintaining quality and efficiency of departmental workload.
