Systems Programmer/Analyst I


Helmet Karim is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Bioengineering whose work focuses on identifying markers of treatment response in major depressive disorder. His recent grant will focus on recruiting patients who are undergoing Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) for an MRI study. The current position will involve neuroimaging data analysis and processing. The Systems Programmer/Analyst I will learn about pipelines for analyzing neuroimaging data, analyze neuroimaging data for a variety of different projects, and help develop new pipelines and documentation for novel processing. 

This position is grant funded.


  • Collaborate in the design and maintenance of server database systems.
  • Assist in statistical analysis for projects.
  • Assist in training department personnel on tools used to capture, enter and track data.
  • Collaborate in the development and dissemination of data management and tracking programs necessary for protocols.
  • Troubleshoot applications.
  • Provide quality assurance of all aspects of data management including data flow, verification, analysis, assessment, archival database, security and confidentiality.
  • Collaborate with the lead programmer in the creation and implementation of databases and applications.
  • Use programming skills to develop and apply processing algorithms.
  • Create and routinely update datasets for statistical analysis.
  • Set up and manage relational databases (e.g., in Access).
  • Design and implement data-tracking systems.
  • Data entry and harmonization (e.g., new data entry, recode data to harmonize across studies).
  • Create reports for quality control and to summarize participant data flow.


  • Typically has completed a four-year academic degree including courses in computer programming, systems analysis, system development, or systems engineering


  • has acquired Core IT skills and knowledge via practical experience
  • Has mastered the essential knowledge base for an IT professional
  • Has mastered the essential IT principles and analytical rules that guide their application in practical situations
  • Able to perform basic/standard IT procedures and protocols
  • Relies on buddy system/coach to demonstrate applied skills and to guide non-routine actions
  • Higher education (Bachelors/Masters) may be required per Grants

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with neuroimaging data (MRI, fMRI, PET, etc.) analysis
  • Working knowledge of research methods 
  • Knowledge of statistics, signal processing, and machine learning highly desired
  • Experience with one or more MRI analysis packages (e.g., SPM, FSL, or Freesurfer) 
  • At least 2-3 years of experience with MatLab and/or Python
