MRI Technologist Trainee


Are you a registered imaging technologist looking to take the next step towards a career in MRI?  UPMC Presbyterian has an exciting new opportunity to help you reach your goals as an MRI Technologist Trainee!  This position will allow you to work as a full-time training Technologist while completing your MRI training program.  The MRI Technologist Trainee will be working a variety of hours, and as training progresses will include all shifts.  The Trainee will work primarily onsite at UPMC Presby and Montefiore, but will also train at our sports medicine locations!

MRI Tech Trainee program must meet and agree to the criteria below.:

  • Candidates must be ARRT, NMTCB (Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board or ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography) registered
  • Candidates must be willing to work rotating shifts as needed for patient care
  • The maximum timeframe for completion of the MRI program will be 9 months with one extension available at 3 months
  • Trainees will be required to sit for the ARRT MRI exam no later than 6 months after completion of the training program
  • When the candidate has successfully passed the Registry exam, he/she will move to the MRI Technologist salary range, if the candidate fails to pass the exam and/or course the candidate will be terminated from the MRI department.
  • The candidate must remain in the MRI department for two (2) years after ARRT MRI certification and registration.
  • Failure to meet this requirement may result in the need to reimburse UPMC for expenses paid for trainee's participation in the Program and/or becoming ineligible for hire as an MRI tech.


  • The trainee will be trained on proper protocol while shadowing and completing MRI training to demonstrate the ability to fulfill all functions carried out below. The Trainee will be supervised by an RT (MR) registered MRI Technologist.
  • At the completion of training should be able to properly screen all patients for any contraindication prior to performing MRI scan.
  • Educates patients on all aspects of the MRI procedure.
  • Under the supervision of Proctor/MRI instructor/MRI Tech, the trainee will shadow until deemed capable to perform daily MRI scans, using proper protocols, procedures, and safety guidelines.
  • Under the supervision of Proctor/MRI instructor/MRI Tech, properly documents appropriate histories and completes all necessary paperwork.
  • After successful completion of the training program, the trainee should be able to demonstrate competence to perform required scans on patients of all ages.
  • After successful completion of the training program, the trainee should be able to demonstrate processes and evaluates QC on processor and magnet daily as assigned.
  • After successful completion of the training program, the trainee should be able to demonstrate administering contrast for specific examinations.
  • Maintains inter-and intra- departmental communications.
  • Exhibits a positive and professional image with patients, physicians, co-workers, and peers.
  • Performs clerical responsibilities as needed.
  • Monitors and maintains current department inventory.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement projects.
  • Complies with Radiology and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Performs on-call duties as assigned.



  • Graduate of approved School of Radiography
  • Must be currently enrolled in an Advanced Imaging Tech Training program
  • ARRT Registered or Registry Eligible
  • Maintains current CPR certification
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or successful completion of BLS training and certification upon hire
  • Clinical training cannot begin prior to the completion of Fundamentals in MRI and MRI safety essentials

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • ARRT, NMTCB, or ARDMS Certificate
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
