Director, Foundation


The Director, UPMC Jameson and Horizon Foundation provides leadership for all philanthropic programs conducted by the foundation. The Director is a member of the UPMC Jameson and Horizon executive management team and provides counsel to the President of UPMC Jameson and Horizon and the UPMC Jameson and Horizon Board on matters relating to philanthropy. The Director leads the strategic planning efforts of all UPMC philanthropic programs benefiting UPMC Jameson and Horizon and affiliates. The Director also has leadership responsibility for the Medical Equipment Recycling Program (MERP).



  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
  • Responsible for organizing and evaluating staff of the Foundation to ensure efficiency and appropriate staff levels.
  • Directs and evaluates the development of specific departmental objectives and action plans within assigned areas of responsibility in support of overall corporate goals and objectives.
  • Ensure an appropriate funds-raised-to-expenses ratio for the Foundation, with a goal of annual fundraising expenses at 25% or less of gross funds raised.
  • Serves as an officer of the Jameson and Horizon Foundation Board and organizes all meetings as assigned.
  • Develops and manages a comprehensive development program for the benefit of UPMC in Mercer and Lawrence counties with an emphasis on major gift (greater than $50,000) support from area individuals, families and corporations.
  • The Director prepares a strategic plan with short and long ranges goals to meet the organizational funding objectives and enlists support from members of the Jameson and Horizon Foundation staff, governing boards, physicians and volunteer organizations.
  • Represents UPMC in local civic activities and in related regional and national affiliation functions.
  • Exercises effective leadership in developing nurturing relationships with Medical Staff members, employees, community organizations and leaders as related to assigned areas and UPMC as a whole.
  • Designs and implements programs to support major corporate objectives of cost containment, productivity and other financial management efforts.
  • Develops and manages revenue, personnel, capital, and other expense budgets to accomplish fiscal objectives of assigned areas.
  • Provides consistent, positive leadership, acting as an informed decision-maker, capitalizing on opportunities and taking initiative in the furtherance of UPMC Jameson and Horizon Foundations and Hospitals.
  • Demonstrates UPMC's commitment to service excellence by understanding the needs of patients, their families, physicians and co-workers and doing what is required the first time, every time by being responsible, sensitive, accurate, timely, coordinated and thorough.
  • Applies sound human resource concepts to achieve teamwork, mutual respect, and the maintenance of the highest level of professionalism and a stake in UPMC's success.
  • Plans and executes Foundation fundraising activities including but not limited to Golf Outing, and other events throughout the year; secures event sponsorships.
  • Collaborates with other non-profit agencies to meet Foundation's mission.
  • Conducts ad-hoc committee meetings of Foundation (Executive, MERP, Grant, Finance, Nominating, Fundraising); writes minutes and follows through as necessary.
  • Oversees Medical Equipment Recycling Program, writes and approves grants as necessary, supervises the coordinator; gives publicity talks to outside organizations as needed.
  • Serves as Director of UPMC Horizon Community Health Foundation and UPMC Jameson Foundation boards. Prepares agenda; provides regular reports to Board of the Foundation and of the Hospitals; completes tasks as necessary.



  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Marketing/Communications, Development, Public Relations or other related field.
  • Master's Degree preferred.
  • 2-5 years applicable experience required.
  • Prior experience leading major fundraising campaigns and charitable giving preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, board members, physicians, volunteers, community groups and leaders.
  • Strong leadership, organization, planning and execution skills.
  • Knowledge of, and experience in, the full range of health care fund development programs and procedures including major gifts, annual giving, prospect research and a working knowledge of planned giving.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with all functional areas of the organization.
  • High ethical standards
  • Ability to manage and facilitate change.
