Description

UPMC is looking for a Manager, Health and Science Public Relations (formal title: Manager, Science Writing) to join our team in Pittsburgh, PA!  This role will work closely with our clinical public relations team to publicize notable research findings from experts from the top NIH-funded University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and affiliated schools of the health sciences. We’re looking for someone who is comfortable navigating complex scientific research, has strong science and medical writing skills and experience working with the media or as a health or science journalist.


Responsibilities:

  • Support UPMC Media Relations team by cultivating and maintaining strong, credible relationships with all appropriate regional, national and international media
  • Work with experts to translate scientific and medical language into clear and comprehensible terms for individuals unfamiliar with the subject matter
  • Appropriately prioritize beat areas for media coverage to meet organizational goals.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in other marketing and communications departments.
  • Create, execute and evaluate public relations strategies for assigned areas via articles, stories, press releases and press conferences
  • Coordinate with pertinent scientific and professional organizations to promote assigned areas.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism or English Writing plus five years of combined experience in general writing with a minimum of three years of science writing, OR Master's degree plus five years of combined experience in general writing including a minimum of three years of science writing preferred, OR PhD or MD plus three years of science/medical writing.
  • Significant experience translating scientific/medical language to a lay person's understanding
  • Experience providing clients with strategic communications counsel.
  • Experience in an academic medical center or healthcare strongly preferred. Undergraduate/graduate coursework in health-related sciences strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills required.
  • Sound news judgment and track record of identifying and promoting stories of interest to regional, national and international media.
