HVAC Mechanic-UPMC Mercy


UPMC Mercy is hiring an HVAC Mechanic to support our Maintenance team at our Pittsburgh, PA location!

Schedule will be 2p.m.-10p.m. will rotate between weekdays and weekends.

To install, repair and maintain refrigeration, air conditioning, ventilation and heating equipment.



  • Make necessary adjustments to components in the refrigeration and liquid handling systems to maintain required temperatures. Also, read temperatures and pressures for record keeping on related H.V.A.C. systems.
  • Responsible for removal of refrigeration mechanic's supplies and equipment from work areas. Estimate necessary materials, supplies and equipment and prepares requisitions as directed. Prepare daily and monthly time sheets and various written reports as requested. May be required to carry a pager as deemed necessary by management.
  • Responsible for proper maintenance of water treatment to all open and closed loops; tests for chemical balances and adds chemicals when necessary. Reads utility meters and checks against company readings to insure against any discrepancies.
  • Responsible for familiarization with shop practices, operation and use of equipment, hand and power tools and materials. Knowledge of all department safety rules. Comply with all regulations imposed by hospital, State and local authorities.
  • Repair and perform service and preventive maintenance work to all forms of hospital beds, carriages and stretchers.
  • Must be able to rotate all shifts, weekends and holiday work schedules.
  • Test efficiency of the system with anemometers and thermometers and makes adjustments to pneumatic controls and blowers. Lubricate compressors, motors and other moving parts.
  • Trouble shoots refrigeration, pneumatic, electric and D.D.C. control systems. Operate the J.C.I./METASYS B.A.S. system, using it as an operational and service tool. Makes repairs to and installs all field components, such as, compressors (refrigeration/pneumatic), pumps, motors, valves, pneumatic controls, filters, piping systems, copper tubing (soldering/brazing) and electrical controls/wiring.
  • Inspect, maintain and operate H.V.A.C. related equipment, including chillers, ice machines, refrigerators, all types of air conditioning systems (split/packaged), heating systems, exhaust systems, water coolers, walk-in coolers/freezers.



  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Trade or vocational school graduate required.
  • Diploma from Accredited School of Refrigeration Mechanics preferred.
  • A four year apprenticeship or equivalent experience required.
  • Ability to read blueprints, shop drawings and specifications for new construction, renovations, installations and maintenance of H.V.A.C. systems.
  • Must possess the ability to move throughout the facility's various buildings, roofs, tunnels and confined spaces.
  • Must possess the ability and knowledge to operate and maintain power equipment/tools, both stationary and portable, pertaining to the maintenance field.
  • Must be able to perform all forms of appropriate maintenance work or repairs on various forms of ladders, scaffolds, man lifts, and safety equipment in order to complete work assignments at extreme heights.
  • Good knowledge of the H.V.A.C. technology.
  • Must have knowledge and ability of soldering and brazing techniques and procedures, and installation and repairs of threaded and soldered piping systems.
  • Must have knowledge and ability to work with sheet metal and ductwork and associated hand/power tools.Good working knowledge of all liquid handling, refrigeration, air and steam systems associated with the H.V.A.C. trade.
  • Must be familiar with the E.P.A. regulated C.F.C. Management handling practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge and ability to maintain/service all pneumatic and electric control systems associated with the maintenance and controlling of all cooling, heating, ventilation, refrigeration and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to move, position and work on equipment of varying sizes and weights.
  • Ability to move, transport and work with standard H.V.A.C. trade equipment and tools.
  • May in the course of their duties be in rooms where medications are stored.
  • No contact with medications is allowed.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Stationary Engineer License (City of Pittsburgh) preferred.
