UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg is hiring a Histotechnician or Histotechnologist to support the Histology Lab! This role will be scheduled M-F 6:00am to 2:30pm.

Histotechnician/Histotechnologist Sign-On Bonus Details:
$12,500 for a 3 year commitment

Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. The Histotechnologist role starts at $22.81/hr.

Purpose:
Process and prepare various types of tissue samples using a variety of techniques in a clinical laboratory.

Responsibilities:

• Demonstrate complete knowledge of CoPath related to Histology workflow.
• Comply with all UPMC and departmental policies, procedures and work practices.
• Demonstrates progression of skills towards working independently in an advanced staining area.
• Perform ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.
• Perform QC checks at each phase of processing/staining.
• Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping.
• Embed and cut specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols.
• Supports academic mission of department.
• Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts or floaters.
• Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.
• Maintain instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.

 

Qualifications

Histotechnologist:
• Completion of the educational requirements needed in order to take the Histotechnologist (HTL) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP):
o B.S. degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnology program within the last 5 years OR;
o B.S. degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory in the U.S., Canada or a CAP/The Joint Commission (JCAHO)/AABB accredited laboratory within the last 10 years.
• Experience must be under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology) or an appropriately board certified medical scientist.
• 1 year of full time experience in a histology laboratory preferred.

 

Histotechnician:

• High school diploma.
• Completion of the educational requirements needed to take the Histotechnician (HT) exam:
o Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program within the last 5 years OR;
o Associate's Degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry.
• 1 year of clinical laboratory experience post-training is preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

• Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) certification from the ASCP is required within 1 year of hire.
• American Society for Clinical Pathology
• Act 33 with renewal
• Act 34 with renewal
• Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
